: GKAIH PRICES '; (Markets by Lamson Bros. & Co., 212 Union National Bank Building.) CHICAGO. 111., Dec. 14. All grains went into new high ground again today and closed near the top. There were rumerous dips due to profit taking and t-ome selling on the bulges, thinking the markets were due Jo ra reaction, but persistent buying power was encountered. Cables were higher early, but closed lower, despite reports of further unfavorable weather in the Argentine and prospects of light shipments from there' until late next month. Weather in the domestic winter wheat belt was also regarded as unseasonable, in view of the lack of snow covering. Some of the late strength was due to a statement by Director of Commerce Klein that better times were ahead for the agricultural community, and also a prediction by a leading Chicago miller that the world's wheat position is likely to become acute before another crop is harvested. Such statements by responsible men should not be ignored. RANGE OF FUTURES . (Markets by Lamson Bros. & Co., 212 Union National Bank Buiiding.) CHICAGO, Dec. 14. MUNCIE RED LIGHT DISTRICT IS COMBED FOR MURDER CLUES (Special to the Palladium) NEWCASTLE, Ind., Dec. 14. Work ing on the theory that Mr .and Mrs William G. Schaffer, who were found murdered at their home near Honey Creek, Tuesday, were the heads of an organized bootleg and narcotic ring of Muncie, Prosecuting Attorney George Jeffrey together with local police prepared to comb the Muncie underworld Thursday. Authorities were led to the investigation by learning of the past record of both Mr. and Mrs. Schaffer, who formerly lived in Muncie. Officials are also puzzled over the reason for Mr. and Mrs. Schaffer living m a house little more than a hut, while it is known Mr. Schaffer owned an 80-acre farm near Muncie. Headquarters of Lawless. In the investigation police are following the supposition that the Schaffer home, -which is located outside of Delaware county by only a half mile, was the headquarters for a Muncie gang of law-breakers. Diligent inquiry is being made tc learn the identity of two men and two women who are reported to have beei seen leaving the abmdoned automobile, later learned to have been Schaffer's car, in front of a residence on Church street here about 3 o'clock in the. morning of last Thursday. If the identity of these persons can be established police believe they will have the most tangible clue yet found. Believe Suspicion Groundless Suspicion which for a time was directed at James W. Davidson, a farmer living in the Schaffer neighborhood, who disappeared, last Monday and didn't return until Wednesday evening, is believed to have been groundless. Questioning of Davidson was to have taken place Thursday afternoon at the local police station. Davidson is said to have explained his absence by reporting that he took a carload of sheep to Indianapolis. Davidson is about 65 years old. Ben Brooksbire, former employe of the Schaffers, is still being held by the police, but his story of his movements before and since the finding of the two mutilated bodies is said -to have tallied with knowledge gained by authorities. He is still in custody, however, as it is believed he may have information which wiU throw light on other angles of the case. FURIOUS LEGAL FIGHT OVER HERRIN KILLINGS By EDWARD C. DERR (United Press Staff Correspondent.) MARION, 111., Dec. 14. Williamson county was alert today in anticipation of spectacular develoments in the first Herrin massacre trial. Heated arguments between opposing attorneys during yesterday's ses sion of court, bespoke a furious battle when the court settles into routine of examining witnesses. The decision of Judge D. T. Hartwell in ruling that Frank Farrington president of the Illinois United Mine Workers, would not be allowed to tell the history of the gunmen who shot down union miners, as suggested by Defense Counsel A- W. Kerr, in his opening statement, Avas received by fruits and vegetables were reported steady to firm for the week. REALTY TRANSFERS Harry B. Custer to Edward H. Toney and Sophia M., S. E. 20-14-1. the spectators as a strong blow to the defense's case. Kerr had boasted to the jury that Farrington "knew the history of these men and would tell the jury of many other actions of violence." After a storm of objections from the ranks of prosecuting attorneys, Hartwell ruled that Farrington -would

not be allowed to testify on that subject. Following the burst of oratory created yesterday, in which State's At torney Delos Doty and Defense Counsel Kerr delivered their opening statements to the jury, the opposing attorneys entrenched for a long battle of legalities in the examining of witnesses.
