INDIANA LEGISLATOR WANTS LAW CURBING DIVORCE PRIVILEGES

(By Associated Press) INDIANAPOLIS, Dec. 14. Passage of a bill which will restrict the ease of securing divorces and another which "will "prevent certain centers of the ; state continuing to permit magistrates : marrying elopers from other states as

well as from Indiana," is favored by G. Remy Bierly of Elizabeth, a Democrat who will represent Crawford and .Harrison counties in the general assembly which meets next Jan. 4. ;- Rigid economy in all departments of government and a reduction of powers -of central commissions, along with - radical changes in the tax laws of the ftate also are favored by Mr. Bierly. ' He declared that, while he believes in ' retention of the direct primary, he thought a change in the date to early "in September would improve it. He Tsaid he would introduce a bill providing the changes he approves in the primary law. The measure "will lessen the time spent in campaigning," he declared. Would Abolish Superintendents 1 Representative Bierly also said that .he favored the introduction of a bill which would abolish county highway superintendents and place the duties in the hands of the boards of county 'commissioners. Other action the representative from Crawford and Harrison counties

' said he believes the next Indiana leg

islature should take include the fol

lowing:

Radical change in the absent voters'

law whereby only a very limited num ber can make use of the law.

Changing the law so that poll tax

can be collected where an individual

votes and there only.

- Submission of an amendment to the Federal constitution, or rather a reso

lution by the state of Indiana, calling .upon several states to aid in securing an amendment to the Federal consti

tution so that a congress elected in

November will meet the first Monday

of December following the election.

MURRAY Lewis Alle Browne, author of "The Highest Law," the Selznick feature picture now playing at the Murray theatre, owes much of his dramatic skill to former newspaper work. "For the would-be scenario writer, Mr. Browne once stated in an address before young aspiring authors, "the newspaper office offers a splendid

foundation. Day by day the reporter must dramatize the ordinary happen

ings of everyday life, and inevitably he grows to instinctively pounce upon

the essential high lights of any situa

tion and serve it up in the form which

will interest and hold the attention of

his readers." ' " ' , ', Besides his work on the New York Sunday American, the Boston Journal

and Forum Magazine, Mr. Browne has

had considerable success as a play

wright for the stage. One of the big

gest successes in which he was co

author was "Please Get Married." It is as a writer of farce and humor that

Mr. Browne is best known, among the

stars for whom he has provided vehicles on the screen being Owen Moore, the Selznick comedian; Viola Dana, Mae Marsh and Marguerite

Clark. Mr. Browne's activities are now con

centrated entirely upon the preparation of screen material for the Selznick

studios and his past eperience com

bined with his ability for fitting the

personalities of the various players un

der contract with this organization is

proving a valuable asset.

Wayne County Threshermen i To Elect Officers Dec. 16 CENTERVILLE. Ind., Dec. 14. An important meeting of the Wayne county thresherman's association will be held at the Wayne county courthouse Saturday afternoon at 1:30 o'clock, according to an announcement by Arthur McMahan, secretary of the association. The meeting will be held in the county agent's room. Officers will be elected for the coming year. All members are urged to be present. The Beaumont and Port Arthur ship channel in Texas has developed into one of the greatest waterways in the United States, both in value of exports and imports, as well as tonnage.

A STORY OF PARTS A city man, driving his automobile along a little-used country road, heard something rattle beneath his car, stopped, looked back and saw a bright metal object lying in the road a short distance behind. It was a plow-point, evidently lost by some farmer. It was fully half an hour before the next car came along, and its occupant, seeing the first man flat on his back under his vehicle by the roadside, stopped and asked what the trouble was. The city man emerged and held up the plow point. "This blooming thing dropped off my car," he said, "and I've been hunting for half an hour to find out where it belongs." From Everybody's Magazine.

by the story in which an abandoned

farm is revived and made productive.

Scenes in the story record the progress of this work. It was obviously impossible to halt production while the vegetation grew. By the process finally adopted, it was possible to trans

plant this vegetation between scenes

and present in the finished picture a

record of gradual growth and development. "Nice People" boasts of an all-star cast headed by Wallace Reid, Bebe Daniels, Conrad Nagel and Julia Faye. The story was adapted for the screen by Clara Beranger from the stage play by Rachel Crothers. The story is romantic and thrilling.
