CUTTING OF EXPENSES IS MOST IMPORTANT i JOB OF LEGISLATORS

LISP COSTS ACTRESS STAR'S POSITION; SUES FOR $20,000 FOR PIERCED TONGUE

By FELIX F. BRUNER INDIANAPOLIS, Dec. 13. Cut

rentes! , Nearly every member of the Indiana legislature Is coming to Indianapolis next month with this in view as tha most Important thing to come before the assembly." - Every member was asked what they ' considered the most important proble to be solved. . Seventy per cent of those who answered declared the reduction of ex

penses and of taxation is the most important problem. Expenses must be cut and the burden ot taxation removed from the shoulders of the people, they declared. They, insisted there must be no new legislation that will make

taxes and governmental expenses moie of a burden. The one exception to this rule in the minds of many was the soldier bonus. Second in the list of the most important' problems outlined by the legislators themselves are education and the reduction of the number of governmental bureaus and departments. The latter proposal was linked with the proposal to-cut expenses in most cases, but otber members said they believed there-is too. much centraliza- - tlon of power in the state government. Those who stressed education as the most important subject failed in most cases to indicate what changes would ! be advocated. , Other Subjects Other subjects considered by mem-

bers to be of paramount Importance

I i included: . . - -

1. The repeal or amendment or me primary election law. 2. The establishment of a tax on gasoline. . 3. Abolishment of tie public service commission. ...... 4. Placing motor busses under control of the public service commission. 5. Taking public schools out of the hands of township trustees. 6. ; Amendment of the motor vehicle licence laws. 7. Enactment of laws regulating public licnlth. S. Enactment of highway legislation. f. Granting of a soldier bonus. Some of these proposals come up at every session. Others are new. One

of the principal contests in the last

session was over repeal of the primary law. An effort was also made to abolish the . public service commission. Some of the other proposed measures p.re ne and some of them it is indicated will have -considerable support. Notable among these is the proposed tax on gasoline. It Is understood Governor McCray will recommend this in his message. A majority of the assembly Indicated

that they favor passage of a soldier bonu. This bill is being backed by the , Veterans of Foreign Wars and othT .veterans. Most 'of -those who favored the measure were hazy as to liov the money could be raised and many of them said they would be for sucty a bill only on provision that it go to a referendum. The Veterans of Foreign "Wars estimate their measure would cost the state $11,300,000. A few of the legislators suggested that the state levy a

sales tax to pay the bonus and one suprcested that wines and beers be

made legal and that they be taxed to

pay the bonus.

MURRETTE ' William de Mille, producer of the screen version of Rachel Crother's

play, "Nice People," did not see the original stage play until after he had purchased the screen rights to the story. His choice of the story for his current production which is playing at the Murrette theatre, was made largely on Clara Beranger's report Mrs. Beranger adapted the play for the screen. "Clara Beranger .'sold' the idea of "Nice People sight unseen," Mr. de Mille said in discussing his most recent photoplay offering. "I had never seen the stage production and from what little I knew of the story, I di-1 not consider it promising jscreen material. "Mrs. Beranger on the contrary maintained that the story had tremen

dous photoplay possibilities. This led me to consider and eventually secure it for Paramount." Clara Beranger will be remembered for her screen adaptation of "Dr. Jekyl and Mr. Hyde," "Miss Lulu Bett," and "Bought and Paid For." An all star cast headed by Wallace Reid, Bebe Daniels, Conrad Nagel and Julia Faye portrays the screen version of "Nice People."

Save Your Teeth

WASHINGTON Once in' a rare while things go wrong in the moviea in ouite a sur

prising manner but rarely if ever does a jail delivery take place in which real honest to goodness convicts escape. This is what actually happened, however, in the filming of some prison

6csnes m "Where Is My Wandering

Boy Tonight," the picture that is said to be one of the biggest heart punch pictures of many years and wincti comes to the Washington theatre today. Scenes were being shot of the hero

of the picture helpmg the warden escape severe punishment at the

hands of a gang of supposedly escaping convicts. The escaping convicts were motion picture actors dressed

as convicts. During the filming of this

big punch escape scene two real con

victs got mixed up with the actors por

traying the parts and beat their way

to safety. Not knowing that thes-) two real convicts were among the actors, no one paid any attention to them and they made good their escapf. Half an hour later they were missed and an alarm soundej They were recaptured under a railroad bridge where they had hidden themselves and were led back to their cells. They seemed to enjoy their experience hugely. The escape scenes and railroa 1 locomotive smash-up in "Where Is My Wandering Boy Tonight" constitute some of the biggest punch scenes ever registered in the movies. , ,
