MIRACLES OF SCIENCE IN DETECTIVE FICTION : LACKING IN REAL LIFE

.NEW YORK. Dec. 12. The flights of genius and miracles of science which solve most of the crimes In detective stories have no real part In detective "work, according to Sir Basil Thompson, former head of criminal lnvesti- - gation at Scotland

S Yard and director

of the British Intel

ligence Service dur. Ingthewar.

Except for the

$B BASIL THOMTSOU

fingerprint system and work In the chemical laboratory on stains, scientific

research has furnished little assist

ance to crime detection. Murder

mysteries and oth

er difficult criminal

cases are solved by intelligence, hard

work and luck, ac

cording to Sir Bazil, with little help from the delicate scientific devices which play so large a part in detective

work on a typewriter. "Take' the dictaphone, for instance,'

eald Sir Basil. "I do not know of a single case where it has been of the slightest value. It has been repeatedly

placed so as to reproduce the conversa

tion of suspects without success. Uhey

do not guess its preence and talk away among tliemelves. Sometimes scraps of sentences are heard over the device, but never in my experience have the

police had any real help from iu Amused By Fiction

"Murders are not necessarily the most Interesting crimes. Some of the

minor ones are more remarkable, and

at I have often been surprised that dram

atists ana iicuon wniers jusisi. uu basing their plots upon murders. 1 never liave seen criminals or detec

tlves treated in fiction as they are in

real life. I read a good deal of detec

tire fiction. It amuses me, but there is nothing for a detective to learn from it usually. It is from successful detec

tive methods of today. I have often

wondered why detectives, with much experience, never went in for writing fiction. The only exception I know of

is ex-Superintendent Frank Froest of

Scotland Yard, who collaborated in some detective stories. I was amused by his repetition all the way through of the fact that the detective always

took out his notebook and wrote down every point. That is just what the Scotland Yard man does. Everything

Is written down. These notes in dif

ficult cases, make a big volume. They , ire of great value In circumstantial

cases.
