Chapters From a Woman's Life By Jane Phelps

SYNOPSIS OF PRECEDING CHAPTERS Doreen Is the wife of Walter Page, an artist. The lattei Is gradually becoming infatuated with one of ' his models, Helen Ralstrom of the "blonde vamp" type. He purchases a runabout, selected by Helen, who accompanies him riding more often than does his wife. One night while Page's mother is paying him and Doreen a visit Walter carries Miss Ralstrom into his own home at midnight, the victim of a motor accident The elder Mra Page insists on caring for the injured lady and tb following morning sends her home in an ambulance. This attitude wins Doreen over to her mother-in-law who heretofore had considered her cold and proud, difficult to get along with. GRACE HARTER LEARNS OF THE ACCIDENT CHAPTER 19

"What's this I hear about Walter

and Helen Ralstrom having an accident?" Grace Harter asked me. She had run in to ask me to go shopping with her, and as we drove to the store she took the opportunity to gratify her curiosity. "I couldn't ask before his mother," she' went on, "but I'm just dying to know what happened." "Walter somehow drove into a tree. He was going slowly so he wasn't hurt. Helen was thrown out and sprained her prkle. Who told you about it?" I asked., - "George. He said it was In the paper, but did not gtve the woman's name. He had seen them start out , from the atudio, so of course we knew It was Helen with him, not you." Fortunately she asked no more questions, taking it for granted, I suppose, that Helen had been taken home at once. But she said: . "It's a good thing! A sprained ankle will keep her away from the studio for a time." - "Ys," I replied, "but It will also delay Walter's picture. He is anxious to finish it." - . "If I were 'in your place, I should wish he never finished it not with

her as a model. Honestly, Doreen, I think sometimes you are blind as a bat! That girl will make you trouble

if yon don't watch out. She's as unscrupulous as the devil." "Perhaps although I'm not so sure

But I am sure of Walter, so why imagine trouble from her?" I spoke

lightly. Grace should not know I was

wildly jealous of Helen, that Walter's evident anxiety over her, his sullen

anger because of what his mother had

done anger he did not dare give ex

pression to had made ine think he

cared for her more than I thought.

To my relief we just then reached ; the shop and she said nothing more of

either the accident cr Helen. But

was to hear more from others! Grace left me at one counter while she visited anotaer and I heard my name spoken by a woman near. She said to her companion: "That's Mrs. Page, the artist's wife. The paper said he had an acident with his car a day or two ago. That there was a woman with him. I wonder if it was Mrs. Page; she evidently was not hurt if it was she." "No telling who it was," her com

panion replied. "He's rather fond of

our sex I've always beard. He had a pretty serious affair with Grace Harter a few years ago. before either of

them married. There comes Mrs. Har

ter now. She's with Mrs. Page, too. Strange they should be friends."

"Probably she knows nothing about

it, a -wife is the last one who hears about her husband's peccadillos." "Ready, Doreen," Grace's voice Interrupted.

"As soon as my change comes," I replied. Then I asked: "Who are those

women?"

"The one nearest you Is a Mrs. Townsend. The other I don't know.

Why?"

"Oh, nothing, only they seemed to know you. I heard her 6ay 'there comes Mrs. Harter and was curious." "Mrs. Townsend is an awful gossip," Grace replied in a low voice as she

bowed to her, "she'd take away a

Saint's reputatifltt." We left the counter, the eyes of the two women following us. I gave no thought to what they had said of the accident, but wondered just how much reason I had not to be friendly with Grace. Sometimes I disliked her,

then again she would say or do some

thing that made me more than reverse

my opinion. She had frankly told me she nearly married Walter. And some

times I thought she still cared for

him, that she too-in spite of being

married to George Harter was jeal

ous of Helen Ralstrom; that she re

sented Walter's attentions to her, not

on my account, but her own.

She insisted that I lunch with her at

Delmonico's. I refused at first plead tag that Mrs. Page would be alone.

"That s Just wny you must come

with me. She'll have plenty of time to sit on you. I don't see how you keep

so good natured. ."I rather like her now," I replied

"in some ways she is wonderful." And

although I went to lunch with Grace

I refused to let her disparage Walter's

mother. Her kindness was too fresh

in my mind.

I am not sure whether I love him. He1

makes a date with me and if the roads are bad, be doesn't come, as he lives in another town. When I ask him why he did not keep his date he says the roads were too bad, but I think he

-ought to come rain or shine, if he

loves me. When we have little quarrels I always get the blues and anxiously wait until the next time when be comes to see if he will make up. Do you think I love him enough to marry him? - Whose place is It to give the first Christmas present, the girl's or the boy's? BILUE. Since you are in doubt about your love for the young man, you may be be sure you do not love him enough for marriage. It Beems to me that you are most unreasonable and selfish to expect him to come to see you when the roads are bad. , It is most difficult to drive in bad weather and there 13 always danger of getting

stuck. You may ' be Bure that the

young man loves you since he has asked you to marry him.

It is the mans place to give the

first Christmas present. In fact

it is unwise for a girl to give much of -a present unless she is engaged. 1

If conditions are as you describe them, it Is too bad, but it would not be wise for you to concern yourself about it. r N. B. It Is too bad that your wife will not listen to reason. Perhaps patience on your part will be the best policy. She nay soon see that you are right and that she is wrong. Often patience will accomplish, more than anything else.
