EXISTENCE OF LIFE

Ull ILItUO DLLOCU HIGHLY PROBABLE

(By Associated Press) . BOSTON, Dec. 8. The existence of life on the planet Venus may be considered highly probable, Dr. Harlow

Shapley, director of the Harvard Ob-! ervatory, said In a recent lecture here. He added that the question of life on Mars ' was controversial, but that its small mass and Its great distance from the sun counted heavily against the probability of life there. "Venus," he said, "is comparable to the earth In many ways and if," as Is likely, living organism develop wherever conditions are suitable over a sufficient interval of time, then it may be considered that life on Venus Is highly probable. On no other bodies in the solar system, however, are conditions at all favorable for the existence of protoplasm." Dr. Shapeley said that accepting the tidal evolution theory of a planetary system, even for stars otherwise favorably located, an encounter of just the right sort with another star was necessary for the birth of a planetary system. "And once such a family Is born,"

he continued, "other stars must not disturb the family, and the star's light

Intensity must remain essentially uni

form for the enormous Interval of time required for the crustal evolution

which must precede animate origins. Many Living Earths.

"Nevertheless, it appears probable that among the thousands of millions

of stars there are here and there plan

ets that conform to the requirements.

iAlthough the animal man probably Is not duplicated in the universe, thero iare doubtless numerous other living earths, and the chance that their Hfu i phenomena surpass in intricacy and highness' those on the earth Is as

-good as the chance that they fall be-

'low our level."

The search for habitable worlds.

the said, was largely a search for con-

'ditions suitable for the existence of

water In a- liquid form. This, he ad

)Jed, was an absolute necessity for the

.development or lire sucn as mat on

the: earth, and a definite chemical constitution for air, land and water also

was necessary. A planets day and

nights, therefore, must not be so long as to prevent the existence of water

In a liquid form. "It seems certain," he said, "that some water exists on Mars at times in a liquid form. The average astrono- . mlcal opinion is that low forms of origlnlsms mJK exist on Mars, that high forms are "ry improbable, and that being physically comparable with pian are absolutely impossible."

(Clhalleinige of Bootleggers

A saturnalia of bootlegging seems to be no exaggerated phrase to describe the startling state of affairs to which the Administration calls the nation's attention. Inspired Washington dispatches tell us that the present Prohibition enforcement methods are "debauching and debasing the entipe country that the President is "deeply concerned over a belief that the moral fiber of the American people is deteriorating through the open disrespect shown for the effort to enforce Prohibition"; and that "the growth of bootlegging, the temerity of rum-runners, and the serious insinuations against Federal enforcement 'officers have been worrying the Administration for some months," until finally "With Prohibition enforcement recognized as on the verge of absolute collapse in four States and in a condition of serious demoralization elsewhere in the country, President Harding considered to-day the issuance of a solemn public appeal to ali good citizens to discourage bootlegging as a last resort to administer the' law." "One way to make Prohibition prohibit," declares the New York Evening Post, "would be to arrest some of the prominent and respectable people who buy what the bootleggers sell." The leading article in The Literary Digest this week takes up the subject of the enforcement of the Prohibition laws and presents the opinions of leading newspapers as to ways and means. - Other news-features of current interest and importance are: 1 .
