B. Pickel and his party will close their

season of meetings Friday in the Barron Street Christian church. Fay Gardner, postoffice clerk, and his brother, Fred Gardner, have joined the evangelistic party and expect to tdevote their lives to the work. The party goes from Eaton to Toledo for a season of meetings. J. D. Hampton, member of the'Pickel party, is remaining in Eaton to fill temporarily the Barron Street Christian church pulpit. He will divide his time between Eaton and New Paris. Thanksgiving services, were held on Thursday evening in the Christian church, the congregations of the several churches uniting. The Rey. Charles F. Irwin. Presbyterian church, preached the sermon. Special music featured the service.

Annual membership drive of the Preble County Red Cross chapter will close Dec. 9, it is expected. The drive opened Nov. 19. and is being carried on through the schools of the county. Preble county's quota is $5,000, according to Miss Myrtle Eenham, executive secretary of the county chapter. Miss Benham is completing a program of Red Cross activities for the winter in the county. In the Red Cross membership campaign in Preble county, the county Red Cross chapter is offering three silver cups to the three schools in the county bringing In the number of memberships. A bulletin board is being installed in the courthouse lor the purpose of posting the results of the congest from time to time.

OBSERVANCE OF AMERICAN EDUCATIONAL WEEK By John J. Tigert, U. S. Commissioner of Education

The Vitamin Breakfast Food

Two years ago Dr. P. P. Claxton, former commissioner of education, instituted the observance of the first week in December as "Education Week." The American Legion last year became Interested in the perpetuation of such a week and took the initiative in inviting the National Education association and other organizations to cooperate in the observance of "American Education Week." This year the United States Bureau of Education association in inviting every American organization, , club, church, school, newspaper, magazine, theatre and individual and bodies of every description to participate in making the week, Dec. 3-9, a real nation-wide revival of educational enthusiasm. . . The Americanism commission of the American Legion called upon the commissioner of education to invite President Harding to issue a proclamation for the observance of this week. The

president has given assurance of his desire and willingness to do this. The bureau of education has arranged with the interdepartment ad

visory committee on government radio broadcasting to use the government's broadcasting stations twice a day throughout the week for the promulgation of educational radio material in connection with the week's campaign. The commissioner of education called upon Will H. Hays, president of the Motion Picture Producers and Distributors of America, to discover to what extent the motion picture houses of America would co-operate. Mr. Hays was very generous and enthuiastic and has definitely arranged for the working out of a program in which the facilities of the motipn picture houses may be U3ed effectively during American Education Week. All governors, mayors, and others in places of. executive authority are ex pected and invited to issue proclamations and otherwise promote general observance of this great movement in behalf pf education. The newspapers and press generally have been invited to issue special educational editions if possible, and if this is not possible to emphasize education during these days y editorials, special articles, and in such other ways as they find possible. It seemed wise, in order that the campaign might be concentrated upon phases of education which are of outstanding significance, to designate certain days on which topics should be stressed. These days are as follows: Sunday, Dec. 3, God and CountryMonday, Dec. 4, American Citizenship; Tuesday, Dec. 5, Patriotism; Wednesday. Dec. 6, School and Teacher; Thursday, Dec. 7, Illiteracy; Friday. Dec. 8, Equality of Opportunity; and

Saturday, Dec. 9, Physical Education and Hygiene. These topics have been selected because they are considered to be - mattrs of national importance and desirable throughout the country. It is suggested that these topics should not preclude the various states from emphasizing those features of education which need to be emphasized at this time in their respective states, nor should they prevent cities and localities from pushing their individual needs. It hardly seems necessary to urge upon the schools and those responsible for the administration and instruction in the schools that it is expected that all will join in the general observance of promoting education during American Education Week to the utmost

extent of their abilities. Programs can be effectively arranged throughout 'all of our schools which will mate-

effort. At the time of present writing a very large number of state superintendents and state commissioners of education have responded enthusiastically in en-

Education Week and none have expressed opposition or indifference. The unity -of effort and interest which has already been displayed is but an earnest evidence that this bids fair to be the greatest campaign for education that has ever been made in the United States.

Health Resort Company . to Take Over Cedar Springs EATON, Ohio, Dec. 1. Articles of incorporation are being prepared, for taking over the Cedar Springs property at New Paris by the Cedar Springs Health Resort company. Por some time the property was operated by the Cedar Springs Hotel company. The new company expects to convert the property Into a health resort and sanitorium. Dr. E. E. Townsend, of Richmond, Ind., some time ago came into control of the property and resulted in formation of the health resort company.

PEANUTS CAUSE CHILD TO CHOKE TO DEATH SOUTH BEND, Ind., Dec. 1. Andrew Lenyo, 5 years old, is dead here as a result of strangulation, caused by eating peanuts', which had been given the child by his parents.
