Chapter 9 - We had ; not been married long before I learned that little things, insignificant to me,, often made Walter cross and impatient. I was very careful that his meals should - be .' well ordered and cooked, and daintily serr ed. I paid great attention to my table, always haTing a fresh centeT piece of low-growing flowers. When first married I had bought 6ome tali blooms, and he had been terribly annoyed, traid a child would know better than to put stalks an a table as a decoration. One day Grace Harter was with me when he flew up about something. She laughed, then said: .... "Poor Doreen! Yon would marry an artist, my dear, and now you have to live with the artistic temperament! I should have married Walter myself but for that! We quarreled too often didn't we, Walter?" "Seems to me I remember you did,' he drawled. well, you were impossible! Made love, Doreen, to every pretty girl or woman ne saw. unce he left me standing in the street while he chased a girl because her hair happened to be a wonderful black. I was furious. wouldn't speak to him when he came back to me. He caught the 'girl though, got her to come to his studio, and painted her." I thought of the way he had found Helen Ralstrom, as she went gayly on"I tell you, Doreen, I don't envy you, even if Walter is the handsomest manI Know. He's delightful to flirt with: but God deliver me from living, with him." - - "Oh, shut up, Grace!" - Walter broke in impolitely. . . r "Can't bear to hear himself called names, can , he?" Grace returned ' Seme day I shall tell Doreen a lot o' things I know about you. I'll have to spend the day with you, Doreen." "Do you know so much? .1 did not know you were so very intimate." I felt I disliked Grace more than ever. "Haven't I just told you I'd have married him' if he hadn't had so much temperament? It's the one thing I believe should be woman's perquisite. Men have no right to it." Grace looked particularly charmine that day; Walter had told her so a once. "You hold your looks, wonderfully, Grace! I'm almost tempted to ask you to sit for me once more." , "Thank you! I love to have my age hinted at. Soon you'll be telling me I'm 'well preserved' or something equally obnoxious. By the way, Doreen. who did Walt buy that roadster for, you or his blonde model? I've never happened to see you in it with him but I've seen her several times." Walter looked angrily at her, then again told her to "shut up," adding: uoreen doesn t understand your nonsense, Grace. "You haven't answered my question, Doreen. I wasn't talking to you!" she saucily told waiter. Walter figeted, muttered: "God deliver us from our supposed HAWTHORN HILL, Ohio Mr. and Mrs. Elmer Mann and daughter, Minnie, of Eaton, Ohio, entertained at dinner Sunday, Mr. and Mrs. Thomai Somers and family, and Mrs. Raymond Beasley and son. If he cares to run Miss Ralstrom home after she's been posing for hours, 1 don't see why I or anyone else should object." But a I said it I was torn with jealousy. She had been them to gether often. : "That's the way to talk. Doreen! Give it to her!" Walter said gleefully as he blew & cloud of smoke in Grace's direction. . ; . "Walter must take you for & ride someday,", I went quietly on. "The car rides beautifully. We're going to spend me day in the country Sunday, take our luncheon and stay all day " "Oh, how lovely! Suppose George and I go too. We might take Claire Gordon along and have a real party." "Great idea, Grace! Walter an swered. "Well start about .nine o'clock, go down Oyster Bay way and picnic in the woods." I could have cried. Why had I men tioned our plan, the day we were to have alone in the country! The thought that Claire would go was a lit tle comfort, but most of my pleasure in the day would be gone with Grace along with her caustic tongue. George with his half veiled love-making. Vel Beauty Chats By Edna Kent Forbes -...., ' Ft" Prolong youth by keeping the figure supple. . V , The really supple figure never grows old. I have seen men in their seventies stand as straight and look as young as men barely 30, and I have seen women of 60 or more, and many times a grandmother, with the youthful slimness and activity of quite young girls. I have in mind a woman of 64 who looks from the back, when a hat conceals her grey hair, like a girl of 18. This is never due to luck ,it is due to exercise and preservance. Some people, of course, retain their youth longer than others. They never seem to go to any special pains to take care of themselves, they live quite unhealthy lives and yet youth stays with them. But these women are unusual. My advice is not for them, they are peculiarly blessed and do not need it. My advice is for the average woman who will grow 6tiff and bent and wrinkle as the years advance unless she takes precautions to preserve her figure and complexion. - The first bit of advice is don't get fat Layers of flesh will keep you from exercising and will , cover up any re maining trace of youth or grace. A girl of 17 with a fat figure does not look young. t :" The Becond bit of advice is exercise the waist. If the waistline is- supple all the motions of the body will be easy and graceful. If the waistline is. stiff Dandruf fy Heads . Become Hairless If you want plenty of thick, beautiful, glossy, silky hair, do by all means get rid of dandruff, for it will starve your hair and ruin it if you don't It doesn't do much good to try to brush or wash it out The only sure way to get rid of dandruff is to disr solve it, then you destroy .it entirely. To do this, get about four ounces. of ordinary liquid arvon; apply at night when retiring; use enough to moisten the scalp and rub it in gently with the finger tips. ' . By morning most, if not all, of your dandruff will be gone, and three or four more applications wi!lcompletely dissolve and entirely destroy every single sign and trace of it You will find, too, that all itching and digging of the scalp will stop, and your hair will look and feel a hundred times better. You can get liquid arvon at any drug store. It is inexpensive and four ounces is all you will need, no matter how much dandruff you have. This simple remedy never fails. Advertisement ". vets and metal brocades are also usee fcr evening wraps. Here are two gowns for the opera season and a novel cloak. Silver cloth suffused with a Persian design that perr.iits the -colors to gleam through the metal makes the whole body will seem stiff. Besides it-will prevent a great number of natural little motions . and exercises which, in themselves, would help keep the body young. . . . -. . Waist bending exercises are . the best. These will take flesh from the abdomen, hips, and up and down the back. Stand with the hands , on the hips, bend forward and backward as far as possible and as far as possible to each side. Jane. In practicing deep breathing, stand before the glass at first to be sure that you have the correct position and then inhale deep breaths that fill the lower : part of the . lungs.r . Hold while you count three and then exhale slowly .Repeat this performance ten times at first and increase it each day. If you find that .you become dizzy at first, stop the breathing for an Instant and then return to it immediately, as this only means . that - you are taking into your blood more oxygen than you have been accustomed to having; but since it also shows you how you. have been starving your system previous to this, it is too important to be ignored any longer. Gradually, this dizziness will disappear and with it will be richer blood, improved health and a cleaner skin. . , , All inquiries addressed to Miss Forbes In- care of the "Beauty Chats" department will be answered in these columns In their turn. This requires considerable time, however, owing- to the great number received. So-If a personal or Quicker reply Is desired, a stamped and self-addressed envelope must be enclosed wltb the question. The Edl'or. Dear Mrs. Thompson: Please- tell me some way to make my eyelashes long and curly. They are short and seem to come out more than they should. Is bobbed hair going out of style? I would like to have mine bobbed, but I don't want to if it is going out of style. THANK YOU. The following is an eyebrow and lash tonic: . . , Red vaseline, five grams; boric acid, ten centigrams. Make into a smooth pasta and massage it into the eyebrows at night, also rubbing lightly over the lashes at the roots. Lashes curl naturally if they are long enough. Bobbed hair is going out of styla, but not every one is giving it up by any means. Just as many who have it say they will not let their hair grow as their women who are letting theirs grow. The Woman of Poise , Once a rarity. Is now to be observed and admired upon every hand. Indeed, no other woman can flourish long in the midst of this modern, complicated life. In the home, in business, in social life, the woman who is serene and confident wins, while the nervous, flustered individual wastes her talents and gets nowhere. Of course, poise Is dependent mainly upon sound health and steady nerves. If you feel that you are being kept back in this way, why not turn to that great woman's remedy, Lydia E. Pinkham's Vegetable Compound, which was manufactured from - a thorough . understanding of the nervous, system of a woman.
