Chapters From a Woman's Life By Jane Phalpc
Chapter 6 ' I was really awfully proud of Walter's success. He lad bad eereral picture bung In the Academy, and was spoken of as "that rising young artist." If at times I wished be had some other profession, just hearing him enthuse over a face, a bit of sunset, a tree as it was outlined against the sky, would 6how me bow utterly foolish it was even to think of him as anything but the artist be was. But I had my bad moments yes, hours and days when I felt sick to think of him in the studio alone with Helen Ralstrom. Of no other model had I ever experienced such continued uneasiness. It was in no way lessened when Grace Harter called one day and said:
"What are you thinking of. Doreen,
to let Walt paint that girl?"
"Whai girl? I dont know what you
mean, I parried, knowing well enough
whom she was talking of, but not how
she knew about Miss Ralstrom.
"That Miss Ralstrom. I was going
by the ctudio and thought Fd run In and see what Walt was doing, and
there they sat having luncheon together as cozy as you like. They did not seem any too pleased to be interrupted either. She's a raving beauty. Trust Walt for that!" "She is lovely," I replied, "the loveliest blonde I ever saw." As Grace was a decided blonde I felt I had scored. "Walt is too good looking to be safe with such a girL I believe she is In love with him now. She looked daggers at me because I joked with him." Grace left soon afterward, but she left a very uneasy feeling behind her. Suppose she were right, and this girl had fallen In love with Walter? He was easily flattered. Would he be able to resist her her beauty? I determined to say nothing of what Grace had told me, not to mention I
knew of her call at the studio. But I would drop in at lunch time in a day or two. I'd see for myself if my happiness was in danger from this Helen
Ralstrom.
Two days afterward I went Into the studio about 1 o'clock. To my sur
prise, Walter and Miss Ralstrom were just going out He introduced me,
then said: ."Harter Just left bis car for me.
Miss Ralstrom has posed all morning.
bo I told her I'd run her home. You
have come Just in time to go with us.1
"How nice!" I returned quickly. , Never shall I forget the look she flashed at me of rage, disappointment.
hate. I had forestalled her by my
quickness.
I climbed Into the front seat beside Walter, while she Btlll frowning seated
herself in the tonneao. I turned occa
slonally to make a remark to her, and once or twice Walter spoke of the
scenery, calling her attention. We left
her at the door of a plain little house.
Walter telling her to come early the
next morning.
She scarcely noticed my polite fare
well, her eyes smoldering. It was evi
dent she hadn't forgiven me for put
ting in an appearance. But Walter had noticed nothing. He said: "I don't wonder Helen was quiet. I've not let her rest a moment all the morning. She usually chatters lively enough. Then before I could reply, He added: "Now well take a spin all by our . lonesomesl Harter said to use the car until 6 and It isn't 3 yet." At this remark, uttered In a gay f voice, all my Jealousy of Helen Ral-
f strom left me. Walter cared nothing for her, she was Juet a model to him. It did not occur to me then that had I not appeared he might have spent the afternoon motoring with her, that she knew this and that it was the cause of her anger. "I must get a car soon, Just a roadster, or a coupe,". Walter remarked a3 he let the car out. "Oh, I wish you could! A roadster
would do, there are only two of us and we dont need a car to take our friends, they nearly all own one." "That's rig! ht and a roadster Is cozy," he replied, then we talked but little, both enjoying the swift, easy motion of George Halter's high-powered car. It was Just 6 o'clock when we drew up at the curb in front of the studio and waited for George. 1 thought he looked somewhat surprised when he saw me, but concluded I had Imagined It why should he? HOTEL DIET SERVICE
Some months ago I wrote aDoat a
New York hotel that had started a special diet service for patrons need
ing certain selected foods. I do not
know of hotels In other cities that have done this, though I am sure
many others have- and others . doubt
less will and should like very much
to bear about it.
I have the diet booklet of this spe
cial hotel. On the front page I find
a list of such troubles as intestinal
toxaemia, for which they have Diet
Menu No. 1; overweight next, where
Diet Menu No. 2 gives a most delicious
assortment of non-fattening foods;
and various other troubles such as
diabetes hyper-acidity aterio sclerosis,
angina Tectoris, rheumatism, gout,
high blood pressure, kidney disease
and several others eacn witn a menu of. specially selected food3 which should be eaten for this condition.
The list ends with a diet for children from three to six years, and another
for children over six.
I am very much Interested to, the se
lection of the foods they offer. Con
valescents, for instance, in Diet Menu No. 3 are given low celluose, high calory foods; that is, foods which are very nutritious, very easily .assimilated, non-irritating, with a great deal of fruit acid and green vegetables because of the vitamin content. Breakfast, for instance, Includes stewed fruit or fresh orange or grapefruit Juice, selected cereal3, including oatmeal gruel. Eggs are never fried. Wheat toast and wheat crackers are recommended, If the patron must have wheat bread. It is given to him Btale. Coffee Is served mixed with hot milk; as coffee substitutes cocoa or hot malted nnfc -are recommended as being better to drink, Auburn It would be impossible to use anything on the lashes to make them curl. A formula for an eye-lash tonic will be mailed you If you will
send a stamped addressed envelope.
S. R. Aj Warts often disappear of themselves, especially on children, but if these are Inconvenient, and not on the face, yon can try to remove them by such simple methods as tying a white silk thread around the base of
each wart, or rubbing salt or olive oil
Into them. Use a pumice stone on them each day during the time you are dissolving them, as that will has
