What Does a Hen Need to Produce Eggs? Coal is transformed into electric energy. Most of us are familiar with the fact that a very large percentage of the coal is lost in this transformation. This same "most of us" do not even consider what there is in the feed we give our chickens. There -is a certain amount of waste in all feeds, so if we read the tags furnished by the state chemist we do not know all the story. The amount of feed that can be assimilated digested is the important feature. There are three kinds of digestible elements in nearly all feeds: fats, carbohydrates and protein. All of these are necessary for feeding a laying hen. Fibre is. also present In most feeds but cannot be digested. YearB ago tests were made of different rations for various purposes and standards were set up for body maintenance, for fattening, etc. Relatively little work has been done on poultry. Dr. Wheeler of the Geneva Experiment Station has done some work along this line. Even at this, these standards are to be used only as a guide in feeding. A study of several successful rations for egg production show that the percentage of total feed consumed . should be divided about as follows: t Fibre, 3 to 5 Digestible protein, 12 to 15, of which 4 to 5 should be animal protein. Total digestible nutriments, 70 to 75. The following table shows the average digestible composition of 100 pounds of several of the more common feeds UBed for poultry:

Red Spiders on J House Plants Sometimes house plants are attacked by small red mites which look something like spiders. Tbesomites suck the juice from the leaves and stem making the plants very unsightly. These Insects are easily disposed of by spraying tho

plants with "Black Leaf 40" Nic

otine-Sulphate. Black Leaf 40 is a liquid tobacco product and is used

at the rate of 1 teaspoonful to a gallon of water. , It can be purchased from Omer G. Whelan, tho Feed Man.

Nutritive ratio is the relation existing between the amount of dl

gestible protein and the combined amounts of digestible fats and car

bohydrates. Tests indicate that this should be from 1 to 4 to 1 to 5.

Since both mash and scratch feeds are used the amounts of each must

be varied so that the ratio will fall within the required limits. , For example, referring to the above table: Scratch Feed composed of

500 pounds corn ., 100 pounds wheat . 200 pounds barley 200 pounds oats . 1000 pounds feed .. 100 pounds feed .

Mash composed of 100 pounds corn meal ..... 100 pounds bran .......... 100 pounds middlings 100 pounds ground oats ... 100 pounds meat scraps ... 500 pounds feed 100 pounds feed Then if equal portions are used of100 pounds scratch feed .. 100 pounds mash feed ....

57.31 57.31 divided by 13.66 equals 4.92. The nutritive ratio In this case is 1:4.92. This indicates, that if one is to feed the mixtures as given, the bens must be compelled to eat more mash than 100 pounds to 100 pounds of scratch. Another indication is that more meat scrap should be added to the mash mixture. . But why worry with all these figures? Let Whelan do it.
