METOE It's a btf odd that certain folks should take the attitude that Tom Gibbons Is too light to have a chance against Jack Dempsey. And It's doubly strange that they are the same natives who were supremely hysterically confident that Georges, the Carp, was big enough to punch Dempsey into cranberry sauce. It may be that Gibbons can't whip Dempsey., But cne thing is certain, and that is if the French False Alarm was deserving of a crack at a world's chamoionshiD. Gibbons Is worthy of 10 of them. For Tom Gibbons has more real fighting blood in his ankles than Carpentier has in his whole system. Every line of logical reasoning plus records and more records prove that Gibbons is a fighter infinitely superior to Carpentier and far worthier of a chance at the title. Gibbons is a bigger man than Carpentier taller by two inches, heavier by -several pounds and with, a reach that exceeds that of the fallen idol of France. Tom knocked out more men In a year than Carpentier put away In about half pf a fistic lifetime. And Gibbons can give boxing lessons to the Frenchman. ; Never Knocked Out fclbbons never has been knocked out or knocked off bis feet in his life. Carpentier has been knocked out soj many times that it's almost necessary to get an adding machine to arrive at the correct total. The American Irishman never did quit The Frenchman ran up the white flag so often that he became internationally famous or, rather. Infamous on that account. Some of the "glorious victories" achieved by Carpentier weren't ach ieved by him at all. His wily mana ger won them by what some folks call "strategy". Others call it a harsher name. The Gunboat Smith affair is a sample. Smith knocked out Carpentier but was disqualified for fouling. It happened yes, that s correct in France 1 Such a man a bloke with more or less of a tin chin, a quitter, and the biggest false alarm In all fistic history, got J200.000 and a chance at Dempsey.. He got it because of the bally-hooing of men who now Insist that Gibbons, whose record so far overshadows Carpentiers as to totally eclipse it. Is too small to have a chance with Dempsey. Odd, Isn't it 7 Doping Is Difficult. Maybe Gibbons is too small maybo he isn't great enough fighter to match Dempsey blow for blow, rally for rally And, on the other hand, maybe he can dethrone the man who seems anin vincible warrior at this moment. Sullivan was a 4 to 1 shot against Corbett. Folks of 1892 gave "Gentleman Jim" less1 of a chance against tho mighty John I than the most skeptical of today grant to Gibbons. Yet Corbett punched a world's champion into exhaustion and never once did the man with a punch as murdeTous as Is Dempsey's lay a glove on the Calif ornian. f No one gave Fitz a chance against Corbett. Foot. ball fans were eager today to see the Army team practicing . on Franklin field preliminary to its contest wTth Navy Saturday. "Dope" on the teams was in the air everywhere. The midshipmen will arrive tomorrow. Preparations for the accommodation of upwards of fifty thousand visitors expected here was the cue for a large number of stage folk to give voice to - exclamations of indignation when they were informed this morning that they would have to give up their hotel rooms for a day or two, as they . had been reserved many months ago for patrons of the game. In vain they pleaded with managers and elerks, arguing that they would be guests for weeks whereas the visitors would be here for perhaps only a day. Finally they realized that the Army-Navy day is a gala affair, an institution with traditions that murt be upheld at all costs and they scurried off for quarters in private homes and boarding housee.
