reparations commission. The gist of the Berlin offer was that no more payments in cash could

mention ot tne word reparations, and upset the government. They saw winter at hand and German crops short. They saw food prices rising and the mark falling and falling and continuing to fall,; and with true Socialist political genius proceeded to make a bad situation worse. "Reparations have formed and colored the German state of mind; and in was this mental state that overset Dr. Wirth. This is the worst of several things now the matter with the Teuton. Germany plays first with the idea of selfdestruction v by way of bolshevism and then broods upon economic suicide as a possible way of escaping the penalties laid upon her. There is something methodical, even in German hysterics. "Meanwhile her industrial kings ' and her profiteers are eating the vitals out of the country and her Socialists and 'Bolos' are getting ready to dance upon the national grave. The great trouble with Germany is that she was a beaten nation in 1918, has never admitted it in her heart nor given up hope of escaping the consequences of that beating." -

Tonsils and Their Ills Throat Specialist Explains Some Modern Ideas About Their Presence and Removal.

Br FREDERICK J. IIASKIlf Washington, d. c Nov. is Th Bore throat season la annrnnchinr when tonsils will again be a popular topic of conversation. Scracely an adult but waxes intent over a general discussion of tonsils. Everrhndir has them or baa had an exciting time get ting na or tnem, ana u by chance a erown-un hasn't nersonallv a. nprfnrm ing set of tonsils, there are always the wrasuar adventures or tne cnuaren, not to speak of their adenoids. yet, with an the interest in this sub. ject. comparatively few Deonla can tell what tonsils are for and why man Kina is eo pestered by them. A throat specialist of this city. Dr. W. A. Wells, explained some of the modern ideas on this subjesct the other day. It may be a shock to some people to learn that we really should pracucauy aispense with tonsils by the age of 15 years. At the age of about 12 In eirls and about IS fn hnra the tonsils should, be shrunken almost to atrophy, says Dr. Wells. If you have had not tonsnar tnH since childhood, the probabilities are mat yours naturally faded out of your life at the proper time. If this is the Case you Should have nracticall-ir nn trouble for the Test of your days. This was natures plan, as modern special ists understand IL The their purpose in infancy and childhood ana men mey uno&trusively shrink. There are several theories regarding the function of the tonsils. The belief that they in any way affect digestion or the singing voice is no longer generally held. Dr. WpHs bom - mtju bunt, the most plausible theory is that they maae wnite Diood cells In young children. At about the age of 10 the bone marrow, which makes th an ma bat nt cells, begins to be active and the tonsus are no longer needed for this purposeIt is a sad fact, however, that most people do not ret; their the critical stage. If the tonsils are not altogether healthy at the time when shrinkage would normally occur the diseased organs flourish and on a very little encouragement frnm germs at any time become sore and swollen. How the TroubI Starts. Trouble starts somewhat like this: the tonsil is a caDsnle mass of soft and spongy tissue known as lymphoid. In this tls flro a num. ber of crypts and depressions. Germ colonies lodge in these recesses, and diseased matter and pus form. These produce poisons and the poisonsspread through the system. In recent years diseased teeth have been a popular explanation of all manner of ailments. Now the throat specialist offers the theory that nine cases out of 10 of rheumatism and neuritus can be traced to diseased tonsils. Heart trouble, kidney inflamations, high blood pressure, and even hardened artenes. nava Deen nnnnpctil with ion. eils. If the natural atrophy fails to take place in adolescence it is generally deferred Until Old aee. Then th nnfr lymphoid tissue is gradually replaced uy nara, iidtous tissue. One Of the most recent ncoa n in a ium to be developed to a practical Budge is in connection witn tonsils Radium is now being used successfully to cause the atrophy that nature fails CUTICURA HEALS LARGE PIMPLES AH Over Face. The pimples burned dreadfully at times, and my face was disfigured in some places. "The trouble lasted about two months. I used other remedies but without success. I read an advertisement for Cuticura Soap and Ointment and purchased some, and after using them two weeks I was healed." (Signed) Miss Martha Palmer, R.F. D. 2, West Salem, Ohio, Jan. 3,1922. to accomplish. Dr. Wells, who recently published a report on this subject, says that radium does in a few hours what nature takes years to do. , Two radium needles are Inserted in a dl seased tonsil for a certain length of time, and after two or three of these treatments the organ is shrunk to its normal Insignificance. The needless used are about one inch long and about the thickness of a phonograph needle. At the blunt end is an eye in which silk is threaded so that the needle can be readily withdrawn. Small as these tools are thev represent four or five thousand dollars forth of radium. The precious substance is In the center of the needle and the exterior, composed of platinum and iridium, forms a screen through which the rays are filtered No matter how often or how little the needles are used one-half of theLpower will not be gone for 1,500 years Mysterious Ways Of Radium. - One strange fact about radium is that it has a selective effect, letting some cells alone and changing the character of others. It has been found that the tissue of the tonsils is extremely sensitive to radium. Colonies of disease germs disappear and tb.3 soft tissue is absorbed and shriveled, leaving only firm healthy tissue behind. . Dr. Well3 does not advocate his method of radium treatment as a sub stitue for removal of tonsils by surgical operation. Radium is for those who cannot stand an operation. It has the advantages of being painless

and of not being weakening. It In volves no hospital illness. Neverthe less it is not for the average person It is expensive. , , Even though new sources of radium are discovered from time to time there is little prospect of its becoming an inexpensive material. The cost of mining and extracting it is large, and doctors using it are mainly specialists who have evolved methods of treatment by long study and large invest ment. Still, the cost of radium is dropping. Where once it eold for $100 a milligram it is now Quoted at around X-ray has also been used as a treatment for diseased tonsils, with vary ing success. The disadvantage is that the rays must penetrate to the tonsils from the outside of the neck whereas radium can be applied directly to the diseased organ. Closely allied to tnnliniis the popular disease known as ade noids, wnen people speak of adenuius tney rerer to a disease of the little tonsil OrEan located between the nose and throat where they join. This oigan is sometimes caUed the third tonsil, and like the other twn it is supposed to shrink early in life.
