LAW FOR LICENSING REAL ESTATE MEN AIMED AT "SHARKS"

, "The purpose of the license law for real estate men Is not purely to limit "competition but ia designed to elimi

nate the 'shark from operating In the community," stated F. D. Miltenberger ' of Muncie, before a group of about 30 local realtors, real estate men and

guests at the banquet held by the Richmond Board of Realtors in the Arlington hotel at 6 o'clock Thursday even ing. The speaker supplemented this remark by stating that wholesome competition Is to be desired since it accelerates all business and enables . buyers to obtain their wants at the most reasonable prices. , "It is a known fact that law, In itself, will not right a wrong, but a

. . Binngent law win produce a rear in

the hearts of those who Indulge In evil practice and will in time eliminate them. The creation of a law always reacts to Influence certain opinion in its favor and if it is a good law, will soon win the support of the public .generally, the speaker continued. "It may be said that anyone may get .a license under the new law. That

.' may be true, but it will be much hard

er for a realtor to keep the license after he has obtained it If he loses his license he will not be allowed to transact business and will be with out the pale of sel-respeoting and lawabiding real estate men everywhere. Law is Necessity The license law is a necessity, said the speaker, because It fixes the responsibility of an honest real estate transaction upon the real estate deal er that holds the license. He also re- - f erred to the property abstract as one of the most fundamental factors in a real estate transaction, stating that a

s , licensed real estate man must have a

knowledge of the wording of these documents, and in this way can be one of the most Indispensable serv ants of the public. The speaker stated that the license law for real estate men has been adopted In 14 states, and he read a survey of the results gained In these states since its adoption. He fol lowed with an explanation of the law, stating that it would be necessary for every active man in the real estate business to be licensed. Mr. Miltenberger dwelt briefly on

the meaning of the term, "realtor," stating that this is a name which may be used only by real estate men who are members of local boards of realtors. The legality of the term has been tested in the courts' and is now protected he said. Guard Against Selfishness "This is the age of co-operative effort and we don't want this organization to become selfish," stated Paul O. Meredith of Indianapolis, executive secretary of the state board of realtors who proceded the principal speaker of the evening. The speaker cited instances where the co-operative spirit is being demonstrated within the body of realtor's boards and as a specific example referred to the process of multiple listing, a practice which make it possible for all realtors . to present to buyers the properties which they-have for disposal in the offices of their competitors who are members of - the boards. Should Study Taxes. Mr. Meredith lauded the work of the present state board of tax commissioners and stated that all realtors should study the tax question in order that they may better serve their clientele. V ! The speaker stated that, as a matter of service to the public, the most efficient real estate men of a community should

offer their services as appraisers, for who, asked the speaker, can be better qualified to know the real value of a piece of property better than a good real estate man? Joseph Schmid, of Indianapolis president of the state board of real tors, also made a brief talk In which he made a plaa for better streets and . roads. He also laid stress on the im portance of organization in the ranks of real estate men stating that it is not only for the good of the realtors themselves but is a good thing for the community. MURRAY VAUDEVILLE Gloom is on the run. There is something about which to wrinkle your face in smiles in each of the four acts playing the present Murray vaudeville bill: and two of the acta are regular "gloom-busters.' While the acts are not elaborately staged or spectacular, the manage ment's endorsement of the bill as being one of good calibre is not mis placed. Al Shayne, assisted ably by Frank Rosair, is a comedian of ability. His popularity is understood before the first half of his offering is spent The singing of his own compositions with the aid of a "pitch pipe" (mostly "pitch pipe,") is one of the real mirth spillers of the performance. . "The Minstrel and the Maid," the act featuring Coley and Jaxon, has one of the best comediennes that ever spouted her woes or -chattered nonsense on the Murray vaudeville stage It takes but a few moments to get "sold" on the act then one indicates his regret for the conclusion of tlw offering by vigorously endeavoring to get the couple back for another number. An attractive opening is given the Dill by the dancing numbers of the Follis Sisters, to the accompaniment of piano music Their "burglar dance" is a feature of their gyrations. Edwards and Edwards, presenting an exhibition of marksmanship, merits approval, and is delightfully entertaining to one with "strong nerves." Charles Murnhy and Ben Turphi in "Home Talent" is the film feature. MARVIN. MURRAY In the old days of the American stock theatre it was expected that players 6hould be competent to ap pear in all types of roles from gravest to gayest; no actor was considered seriously worthy the distinction of being called "actor" who did not equip himself to appear eloquently in "The Bells," for instance, and as one of the two Dromios or as a comedy character in a farcical "after-piece." The screen has developed a race of specialists and the tendency is to pick players for their type value rather than for their all-round ability as im personators of characters and personalities. In the Sennett organization, versa tility has always been demanded, and it 13 claimed that no picture-making concern has the reputation of the Sennett Comedies, Incorporated, for developing actorial skill and producing players that can appear creditably in a wide variety of roles and a broad diversity of characterization. In Mack Sennett's newest comedyfantasy, "Home Talent" playing at the Murray theatre a young actor can be seen in a role that runs the gamut from the classics of an with distinction and dignity to a heroic Antony impersonation, done "hick-player" doing the lower rungs of the ladder of legislature, were present and made speeches. Roy Friedley of Muncie. who accom panied Mr. Miltenberger to the banquet, made a brief talk in which he ex tolled the fine points of the city of Muncie, stating that it was always his policy to boost Lewis Bowman, representative of one of the local banks, then reviewed the glowing ac tivities of Wayne county persons as they have been given us by history and stated that Wayne county persons have no cause to be ashamed of their county. Representatives of the several banks and several local business men were the guests of the local board of realtors at the banquet

All-day work at Balboa and night work at Laguna, Cal., with a fortymile drive between, was the fate of Betty Compson's Paramount company during the making of "The Bonded Woman," a Paramount picture, which is doing a record business at the Murrette theatre this week. Starting promptly at nine a. m. the company worked under Philip E. Rosen's direction on sea and harbtr scenes at Balboa until the light failed at five or after. Then it was a matter of a hurled dinner, a change of costume, and a forty-mile drive to Laguna for storm scenes at night Finishing at midnight, they must drive back to Balboa for a few hours Bleep of exhaustion before getting up to begin all over again. This kept up for a week, and a grateful cheer went up when it was over. "The Bonded Woman" is based on a story by the late John Fleming-Wil son, and the cast includes John Bow ers, Richard Dix, Ethel Wales, Wm. Moran and Mervyn LeRoy. WASHINGTON Freckled Wesley Barry, the phe nomenal young actor featured in "Rags to Riches." the Harry Rapf production sponsored by Warner Brothers which comes to the Washington theatre on Sunday for a run of 4 days as the leading attraction of the bill, has discov ered that acting for the silver screen is not a bed of roses, not the easy thing it is comonly supposed to be. In one of the scenes of "Rags to RlcheV Wes, in the role of Marmaduke Clarke, has to wield a full-sized axe and earn a breakfast by splitting wood for a farmer. Wesley faced the profTfct of wood chopping with perfect equimity, but when the axe or his arm proved helpless against the wood, the lad rebelled: T reckoned I was hired to act, not to chop this durn wood!" he angrily exclaimed. "Anybody kin do this sort of work;" And while he complained, the camera clicked and made this little episode a part of the picture. Whether a family uses bakers or home-made bread, it is essential that every housewife know the most modern method of making a perfect loat of bread. Miss White of the educational department of Washburn-Crosby company demonstrated to about 400 Richmond housewives Thursday the proper mixing of bread ingredients, the importance of temperature, the rising process and its effect on the dough, and the final baking. The resulting loaf of bread must have the following characteristics to be perfect: It must be attractive in appearance, evenly rounded on top with a smooth, unbroken, tender, golden brown crust The crumb should be slightly moist of a fine even texture, creamy white in color, with a satiny luster and the whole loaf should be delicious in flavor. Miss White used the five hour process in baking this bread, thus proving to the housewife that bread baking need "hot confine her to tne house for the entire day. - Gold Medal cinnamon rolls were made from the following recipe: pint milk, pint water, 1 cake compressed yeast 2 tablespoons sug ar, 1 level teaspoons salt 2 table spoons butter or lard, 1 sifted Gold Medal flour.
