WASHINGTON One of the most beautiful photo plays seen here in many months, Is The Old Homestead," which is now showing at the Washington theatre. Theodore Roberts is excellent as Uacle Josh, the role made famous by Denman Thompson on the stage. The picture is thrilling and the various roles are admirably played. . A champion will be remembered among the cast of Rodolph Valentino's new picture. This champion is none other than "Marquis," a thoroughbred German police dog recently acquired by Mr. Valentino, who Is a fancier of this particular breed of canine. "Marquis has a tone string of medals and first prizes and is reputeto be the champion dog of his kind on the Pacific Coast. He Is four years old and was trained in Italian, so that he does not understand an English command. There is a decided jealousy between Marquis and Sheik, the latter being the star's other dog of the same breed, one year old, and so named in honor of the Paramount picture, "The Sheik," in which Valentino was playing when he acquired the dog. Sheik is inclined to resent the usurpation by th3 newcomer of a share of his master's affections and attentions, and Ma:quia selfishly wants to be the on'y pebble on the beach. So far as these two "Heinles" are concerned, Germany is continually at war with herself. Marquis will make his screen debet in "The Young Rajah," is master's new Paramount starring "vehicle, which comes to the Washington theatre Sunday. Wanda Hawley, a Paramount favorite, has the leading woman's role. MURRAY Many are the trials of a tender-foot in the country of the rancher, as Raymond Hatton discovered when he set out to play the part of a timid hero in the new Goldwyn picture, "His Back Against the Wall," which is now being shown at the Murray theatre. As a coward who was forced to become a hero in order to live up to the custom of the country in which he found himself. Mr. Hatton was always ill at ease. One of the minor parts in "His Back Against the Wall" Is played by a well known actor of cowboy roles. Jack Curtis. Besides his ability to ride f;iriously, Curtis is a crack shot In one scene, he surprises the timid hero practicing with his Colt on a tomato can. The coward-hero Invariably misses. Laughing at the other's im potence, Curtis rides by, pulls out his gun, takes a pot shot and hits the mark. Wheeling suddenly, he flashes by a second time, and pops the can again. He does this time and again to the utter amazement of the 'hero.' In Mr. Curtis's case, the riddling of the can was not done afterward. He happens to be a crack shot and he hit the can every time. The result of his -revealing the weakness of the hero that the town has acclaimed, is un roiuea in a western comedy of rare charm.
