WORD FROM GLORIA Chapter 96
"But Gloria will be back!" Pan said.
Frankie presented no problem to her. "Not for weeks I saw them in Paris
before I came over."
"Oh, tell me you never said a
'I can't imagine Gloria really quiet,"
Pan said thoughtfully.
I didnt say she was quiet there
was pletny of vivacity, but not the
neurotic sort, plenty of gaiety, but not
tne rorced kind, wait and you'll ee. They were going to the South an-1
wordi" she reproached him. "Were Italy. I told them they'd melt, but
they happy? Was Gloria happy? Do
you like Santley now he's back?"
"I've always liked him. I used to
know him very well. In the old days,
George said. "I always knew he was
in love with Gloria, we were botn
with her, trying to keep up her cour
age, in the dreadful time when she
was making up her mind to break loose and go to New York. He was
glad then that my home was America.
so I could keep an eye on her. He was ready to quit over here and go
back, but she wouldn't have it. "I know." "I was her guardian, in his eyes

"You would glare at her, I've seen
you, interrupted Pan.
- ."I was glad of you for a time, 'be'
cause I saw that would be a quiet
force with Gloria, sort of a sedative to
keep her down when you were togeth
er. Later I was glad that Gloria could be of use to you when I began to fall
in love with you.1
"When was that?" asked the girl deserting one topic for another more
fascinating.
"I don't know sometimes I think from the time I first saw you huddle behind a gorgeous sofa cushion, because you were ashamed of your shabby frock; sometimes I think only from
the night you brought me a hot sup
per and insisted on my eating it. Pan laughed, then demanded. "Now, go ohead about Gloria."
"Gloria? Oh yes well, one night while I was at work I had a phone
call from Santley, asking me to dine with them. We spent the whole eve
ning talking and most of the night
there was a lot to say. Happy? 1
6hould say she was!" "Quieter?"
"Yes, steadier that is, not eo apt to

Heart Problems
Dear Mrs. Thompson: I am a girl
18 years old and go to high school
I love a boy very much. He is about one year my senior. He seems to care for me, but I am afraid to let him
suspect that I do. He goes with other
girls because he doesn't know I . care
for him. If you wlre me, would yod
in Eome way try and show him that 1
car for him, or would you forget about him and like a boy that goes
they didn't seem to mind. Gloria says that she's going to all the; places where
sne was unhappy before, lust to see
what they're really like, now she can
see them as they are."
Laying ghosts," Pan said, thinking
of some of the long talks between George and her friend.
Laying ghosts 1 But it will take
another month at least, there are many
of them to lay. That's why I 6aid
Frankie was a problem."
'But we wont be married before
she before they come back?"
A month! Are you going to make
me wait a month?"
Pan laughed a little at that
"I hadn't thought this is all so new
to me. I'll marry you whenever you
say. But it seems so odd "
She broke off and looked at him. "What seems odd, sweetheart? "The idea of marrying you. I'd real
ly, be your wife wouldn't I?"
i nope so unless you thing an
English clergyman can't do it up properly. In that case we'll have to em
bark soon for home "
No, I didnt mean that. It's lust

den tears were near the surface again.
JJon t you see? It s so much hap
piness, so much more than I deserve,
so much more than I ever thought
wouid come to me!" Her eyelids
trembled a little, it seemed for a mo
ment as though the tears would come
they had been near the surface all
evening.
I loved you so much. I knew
would be perfectly happy if you were

Her dark eyes were shinins and the
little face that was even too slender most of the time, was vividly alight
with her Joy. George thought her
most beautiful as she was when she
was well and happy, she had an elfin
quality of face and figure that was
more than mere beauty. "We'll be married this week," he said suddenly. "Will you have to bother about trousseaux and things? Get it after you're married I shant tell Gloria until she comes back here. But what shall we do with Frankie?" "Take him along," answered Pan. Monday A Marriage

First Applied ln'1824 ' It was not until 1824 that the term "Portland cement" was applied to anv of the cement mixtures which had been utilized with considerable success in England for many years, says the
Detroit News. In that year a patent
was grantea to Josepn Aspain, a bricklayer of Leeds, on a process for
Durnmg ana grinding "portiand ce

the cement hardened its color and
appearance was similar to a well

friends, and then gave my husband
a lot of work. After the work was finished, my husband started sending in bill's for it. The man always made an excuse tor not paying. Finally we gave up hope of getting anything for the hard work that my husband had done. At that time we made some new friends and they told us facts about the other man which were not to his favoi, and thy urged us to sue him! It seems an awful thing td sue some
one who has been a friend at one time. Still he owes us $500 and we need tha money badly. What would you advise us to do? MRS. W. G. F. Sue for your money, because It is only right you should have it The man was not a friend in reality or ha would not have treated you so shamefully. Business is business and he has no right to hire your husband without paying him.
The industrial world is indebted to
John Smeaton, a civil engineer, for
ascertaining facts which ultimately led to the perfection of Portland cement He was in 1756 commissioned to build a lighthouse of masonry upon the
Eddytone rock off the harbor of Plymouth, which would resist storms as
well as fire.
