naturally is due to the increased num-j ber of convictions. According to the law, when one i" convicted and pays a fine for violating the fish and game laws, a fee of $5 is allowed the conservation department, and it is made a part of the fine. This fee goes into he state's school fund. According to the report there was a total of 1,769 arrests last year from which 1,666 convictions were secured. The largest number of arrests made by a single warden for the year was 118, and this honor fell to George Wyatt, of Foft Wayne. Tbe general average of the wardens was 60 arrests. Violet Served Society As Napoleon's Symbol "Corporal Violet" was an appelation

given to Napoleon Bonaparte during his stay in Elba In 1814-1815 by his adherents in France, says the Detroit News. The violet was the floral device of the empire, and was worn by

its partisans, who confidently pre

dicted that a certain "Corporal Violet" would return in the spring.

Napoleon was toasted as "Corporal Violet and "Father Violet," while ladies who longed for the Emperor's

return wore violets in" their bonnets

and smiled significantly when asked

the reason. Little pictures of the

flower were "sold, which, on raising

the petals, disclosed the features of

the banished hero.

MICHIGAN INDIANS

STAGED JURY TRIALS Trial by jury was common practice among the Indians of Michigan in early days. The Saginaw band . of Chippewaa held a murder trial near the present site of Saginaw in 1823." A Delaware Indian from Ohio had married a Chippewa woman, and came to live with the tribe. During a drunkbrawl he killed another Indian, and waa called before a council for trial. The tribunal of Indians sat in a circle about a council fire, with the relatives

of the murdered man among them. The murderer appeared in hi3 own defense, ' explaining that he had been drunk at the time, and was therefore not responsible for his acts. 'He was willing, however, to make such reparation as lay in his power, according to the law of the tribe.

Thereupon he carried a great bun

dle of furs, a blanket and all the money he had, and laid it at the feet of the relatives of his victim. The law then required him to walk slowly about the circle with folded arms to

await the verdict. If the Telatives of

the deceased were satisfied he would

be permitted to go unmolested, but any one of them who still harbored

malice had the right to kill the mur

derer on the spot. The Delaware passed the relatives and none of them lifted a weapon or a hand against him, but near the end of his circuit sat old Kishkawko, a chief of savage instinct. As the man on trial passed in front of Kishkawko the chief leaped to his feet, crashed a tomahawk into the

brain of the murdered, and he fell dead. Thereupon there was ,an outbreak of protest from the council. Several 4f them exclaimed: "It Is contrary to our law." Kishkawko growled in answer: "The law is changed!"
