f ESS AVOIDS LIQUOR . QUESTION; DISCUSSES FOREIGN RELATIONS

' CINCINNATI, Ohio, Not. 2. Perhaps never before was a candidate for public office placed in & more trying situation than was Prof. , Simon D. 'Fess, Republican candidate for United States senator, last night, when the Yellow Springs professor, who is known to be as dry as a cinder, faced two large throngs in Camp "Washington and in Corryville, the personnel of which was near 100 percent liberal in

sentiment and at the start hostile to

him individually.

Both localities, however, are peopled largely by persons of German descent, normally intense partisan Republicans and strongly nationalistic in opinion.

Whether he was coached or whether he divined this, he made the most of it in his addresses. The liquor question had to be for his purposes obscured or overwhelmed and he essayed

the task valiantly. v Whether he accomplished his object only the poll next - Tuesday can telL ', Holds ReceptlorC Following a luncheon at the Business Men's clubr when prominent business and professional men and women were invited guests, Prof. Fess held a reception in the Hotel Gibson, and in the evening was the guest of honor at a dinner in the Western wills Country club .arranged by.Mr. and Mrs. George F. Schott At the Camp Washington meeting, .held on the ground floor of a factory building, there was a concert, dancing and refreshments in addition to the speechmaking. Prof. Fess, after a few complimentary references to the renown of Cincinnati and the high character of "its people, launched directly Into a dis-

to Charles F. Nead, of the Norwood

Democratic club, in which Mr. Wilson,

in response to greetings sent to him, voiced the hope that a '"great victory

would be won by those who believe in recovering that leadership which we lost by the rejection of the Trea ty of Versailles," Prof. Fess asserted that,

together with the speeches of former

Governor James M. Cox, demonstrated

that the Democrats again purposed to put over the Versailles Treaty and its

embodied League of Nations.

MURRAY In producing "The Loves of Pha

raoh," a new Paramount picture, which is playing at the Murray theatre, Ern

est Lubitsch, who made "Deception," "Passion" and "Gypsy Blood," haa accomplished his greatest screen achievement. '

New York newspaper critics i were

unanimous rn acclaiming the picture as one of the masterpieces of the

screen. The big battle scenes were directed by Mr. Lubitsch from an ob

servation station. The people were drilled In 'groups of fifty and their movements before the camera were directed by more than a hundred lieu

tenants or sub-directors working at

signal stations, all in direct communication with the producer. .

Speaking of -Dagny Servaes, who

plays the role of Theonis in the picture, Mr. Lubitsch stated that he picked his leading actresses with regard 6olely for their ability to portray properly the characters. In Miss

Servaes, he found a combination of ability and beauty.: She 13 a Viennese actress of the legitimate stage, the daughter of the dramatic critic of the Lokal Anzelger, one of the leading newspapers of Berlin. ' MURRETTE .

Thi3 picture, the most pretentious which the brilliant star has x yet done, is playing at the Murrette theatre. "The Hands of Nara," in its novel form, is excellent motion picture material. It is full of dramatic action,

thrills and suspense, and the picturized version Is even more gripping. Mr. Child has provided a variety of incident that abounds in colorful situations and sharp characterizations. In the photoplay, Miss Young plays
