FARMERS' LIMITED PURCHASING POWER BLOW TO RETAILERS
(By Associated Press) ABILENE, Kan., Nov. X The limited buying power of farmers has dealt a staggering blow to profits of dealers In agricultural implements, according to Herbert J. Hodge of this city, secretary of the Western Retail Implement and Hardware association. However, the dealers are" trying to meet it by aiding the farmer in various ways, Mr. Hodge said.V "We lecognlze that unless we can absorb the advances in the prices of materials, labor and coal, reflected in the cost of our commodities, the farmer cannot buy from us," said Mr. Hodge. "The farmer already has been letting bis equipment run down. We recognize that what helps the farmer helps our business. "For one thing, we are working with the farm bureaus, the manufacturers' Associations and the department of commerce to standardize machine-! and parts, and to eliminate unnecessary parts. The farm bureaus want their members to be able to buy a sec1 tion or guard to fit any machine; we are with them in that desire. "For another thing, we have been conducting 'repair weeks early in the season, that farmers might order their repairs early and that we might be ready for them, for we recognized that many farmers were unable to buy entire new machinery. At the same time we encourage the purchase and use of power machinery wherever feasible." The Theatres MURRETTE "The Hands of Kara" is the next photoplay in which the brilliant Clara Kimball Young will star. It is announced for the Murrette theatre on Thursday, and it should prove one of the season's most entertaining photoplays. Richard Washburn Child, the present Ambassador from the United States to Italy, 13 the author of this very successful novel, which ran for many weeks as a serial in Collier's Magazine. In its book form it has had a wide sale, and it is considered one of the best sellers of the year. "The Hands of Nara" marks an admirable picture, and it provides the
talented Miss Young with an extremely effective character to portray. The story has its setting first in Russia, where several of its most dramatic scenes take place during the revolution. Next the scene shifts to New York, where, against the background of the famous Ghetto and, later, of the luxury of Fifth Avenue, the gripping action continues. Miss Young plays the part of a beautiful young Russian girl who escapes the revolution and reaches New York after many hardships. Many adventures befall her, but none more interesting than the revolution to her that her hands possess a remarkable healing power. Her newly-found gift brings her temporary fame, but it almost causes the loss of her lover. Miss Young is surrounded by a very capable cast, headed by Elliott Dexter. Others are Myrtle Steadman. Vernon Steel, Margaret Looms, Count John Orloff and John Milterne. - "The Hands of Nara" was produced for the Samuel Zierler Photoplay Corporation by Harry Garson. Metro i3 chief distributor.
