BEING IN LOVE Chapter 93 "In love!" echoed Pan. I knew you cared a lot for me, you were always so nice I thought perhaps you loved me but that's different from being in love isn't it?" "I should say!" And George rose, crushing the un smoked cigaret into a tray, and stood before her, looking

down upon her. "In love!" Pan said again wonderingly, and sat looking up at him. "I was so sure it was Gloria " , "It wa3 never Gloria that way Gloria I've always loved and adored, except when she annoyed me but that's quite different. My dear " He held out one hand, to pull her to her feet and into his arms. But th-j girl did not rise, she let her hand lie in his. And suddenly her eyes filled with tears, which rolled unheeded down her cheeks. Then George who much as he had cared, had always kept their friendship unsentimental, dropped dowfiNto the arm of her chair and put his arm around her shoulders, pulling her close to him. "Don't cry," he begged.

Her answer was a gulping sound, as Pan tried to stop what threateifed to

be real sobs.

He touched her straight dark hair

gently. "I mean, do go ahead and cry,'

George amended. "I think all women cry when they're being proposed to sweet little unwordly ones like you.

anyway."

He patted her shoulder, thrilled at

her nearness, yet feeling suddenly hun

dreds of years older than she was

Pan s answer to this was to laugh a

little. She drew back and looked up

at him with smiling lips and tear-filled

eyes. "I'm not crying." she contradicted

in spite of abundant evidences. "I mean, not really crying. I don't know why I should have seemed to. Anyway, you're not proposing to me." ."I'm going to if you'll give me time," George held her tighter, and smiled too . as she wiped away the last drop oi moisture and looked suddenly as radiant as the sky when the sun comes out ' after a summer shower. "But first tell me what made you do it." "Cry? I don't konw. .1 was surprised, and happy, because you said you were in love with me and not with Gloria." "Then you do love nie? You must, or you wouldn't have been glad I was rot in love with Gloria." "Oh no you don't understand." Clearly George didn't, so Pan went on, winding her fingers between his as his hand lay on his knee, feeling his other hand resting on her shoulder, ar.d so stirred emotionally by his nearness and the knowledge of his love that she forgot all her old little inhibitions and tightnesses. She could talk now. "I do love you. of course. But you've always known that. Ard I'm glad, of course, that you're not In love with her. Sflfishly glad, and glad too, because she did not care for you that way. "But you see you and Gloria have been my two best friends, really my

two only friends because nice as

Bobby, and Mrs. Clarke, and Ned have

been they're different. They don't

count. And I wanted you to be happy

and I thought you would be happy to

gether."

She paused a moment, then hurried

on:

"I thought you were in love with

each other, way back last winter when

I first came to live with Gloria. She was so clever and brilliant, so many men were attracted by her It seemed natural enough that you should be And you were at our house a great da1. Gloria depended on you, she was always quite independent of the others." "I was her oldest friend, you see," George explained.

"I know," the bent head nodded and i

Pan went on: "But I thought, because her manner with you was different, because she . did seem to depend on you that she loved you. And then one evening, do you remember, you gave a party and we came late, and Gloria was very tired and keyed up and wouldn't danc3 with you " "I remember."

"You stood near me in the doorway ard looked so cross! I said somej thing about you and Gloria something I 1 shouldn't have said probably butj you answerii. 'yes. wo'ie all in lovoj

with her. . "We all were. There arc shades and riis-tinotloru of love,, as you will find out when you aro really grown up," George answered. "Well, later as I came to know her better, I found out about Santley. I knew she really loved him and we al! knew that it was only a question of time when she would be free to marry

Then I as 60 sorry for you, I thought

you cared, and had no chance." "Well?" George prompted as she stopped. "Then qame that mix-up over cables, when we sailed and there was no word

from Santley and no one knew where he had gone when we reached London Gloria was desperately hurt over that she didn't understand. So I thought

she was going to marry you, or would

marry you out of desperation. That s why I wanted you to come back and take your own part after Santley returned " "Little sweetheart and all the time you were in love with me!" George bent down over the brown head, until his lips touched her hair. Tomorrow Real Love

Heart Problems

Dear Mrs. Thompson: I am in iove with a young man twenty years old. We went together for about five months and all at once he quit coming but Sunday evening he came back. Do you think he likes me? Please teli me how I can win his love as I think more of him than any young man I have ever gone with. He insists on going with other girls, but he doesn't want me to go with other beys. Do you really think I can win his love in the course of time? ' My folks think a lot of him and ho seems to think a lot of them. My youngest brother likes him particularly. The young man and I do not live in the same town. Do you think it will make any difference in our love affair? I live about twelve miles from here. He has a machine and it doesn't

take him long to come to see me. GOOD-LOOKING. Yes, I think the young man likes you or he would not have come back. It is impossible to say whether or

not you will win the young man's love. For you to try to do so would be more than foolish and in your effort you would make him dislike you. Try to regard him as a good friend and not a sweetheart. If he wants to go with other girls, make no opposition and do not mention the matter to him. Do not, however, give up other young men friends, because it is no more right for him to have girl friends besides you than for you to have boy friends. Anyway at your age it would not be wise for you to go exclusively with each other. The fact that you do not live in the same town should make no difference in your friendship, or "love affair," which you choose to call it.

A l if

special case is to take some foot and ankle exercises every night and if the bones and muscles seem weak, to bind the ankles during the day with long bias strips of unbleached muslin. This binding is a most effective way of reducing and strengthening the ankles but it Is a temporary treatment. The real cure for ankle troubles is exercise. You will need muslin strips several yards long. The end of one of these should be passed beneath the foot, the

muslin is then given a few turns around the instep, the last turn carrying it over the instep to the ankle and so on round the ankle and calf ot the leg.

fat is being consumed. The healthful

way is to do this through the diet, and !

Try This to Strengthen and Reducft

The Ankles. The pretty ankle is always slender, yet it is never too slender. It musi appear to do its share in carrying the weight of the body." If it is too thin to seem to do this it loses all its attraction. Women who want to reduco their ankles must beware of reducing too much. The ankle's snape is as important as its slenderness. This means that the

leg above it must be well rounded and firm of muscle, otherwise there will be no graceful curve to show where the ankle joins the calf of the leg. The woman's figure 'will terminate iu two straight sticks below the hem ot her dress. In this as in most ' problems ot beauty, we come to the question ot health. The woman who has lived a strenuous childhoo d and who keeps up her interest in outdoor games

is almost sure to be the possessor of enviably pretty ankles. She exercises enough to take off surplus fat and to

keep the muscles elastic and strong. The woman with the real problem is

she who possesses thick ankles and no
