SOUTH BEND HANDLES a INDUSTRIAL PROBLEM BY IMPROVED METHOD
(By Associated Press) . CINCINNATI, Ohio. Oct. 28. South Bend, Ind., la hi better shape Industrially than any other city in, the Hoosier state from a government rlew point in the employment of rehabilitated veterans, said a statement issued today by W.JI. Kemper, district employment representative of - the United States Veterans' Bureau of Ohio, Indiana and Kentucky. Indianapolis and Evansville, said Mr. Kemper.s statement, have very few government trained men who have not . been offered employment. The greattest difficulty, Mr. Kemper explained, ' was the placing of men trained in commercial pursuits, such as accounting and bookkeeping. This, he said, was i due to the fact that during the lowest I ebb of business, when the production J departments of many concerns were i practically closed down tight, the ofi fice personnel of most organizations ; remained intact ' i Need Machine Men s During the. last three months, he said, there has been a constant re- " quest for men in the machine trades, j A general improvement, has been notf ed in practically every line of endeav
or, he, continued, and that he had rea-
t sons to believe that every government drained man will have been accepted
I , Tor employment by Dec. 1, 1922. He said that the potential employer of an ex-soldier was not asked to make any concessions to the man on the grounds
or patriotism.
Ohio, he said, has made good progress in the employment of veterans
disabled during the war, but now rehabilitated, but that Kentucky offered the most serious. problem industrially
chiefly because agriculture is the lead
ing business In that state. He said
that inthe three states more than 97
, per cent of the three thousand tnen
trained by the government were now
' employed.
