PRESIDENT EXPRESSES SYMPATHY AT DEATH OF WEST ALEX FRIEND eaton, Ohio, Oct 28. Among a number of messages of condolence upon the death of Oscar Sheppard. lawyer, soldier, ex-legislator and prom inent Preble county resident, was one from President Harding. It was re ceived at the Sheppard home In West Alexandria, where Mr. Sheppard passed away Tuesday night. The president's message was dispatched from the white house in Washington and read: "I am greatly distressed to learn of the death of Mr. Sheppard, and hasten to express my sympathy. He was not only one of my highly valued friends, but he was a most useful and respected citizen of our great state of Ohio." Senator With Harding Mr. Sheppard had represented Preble county and tbe) senatorial district in the state legislature. He and President Harding were in the senate at the same) time and for a time were room mates. . It Is said, Mr. Sheppard at one time turned down an offer of a seat in the. United States senate from Ohio. The time is said to have been when the late Mark Hanna sought United States senatorialahip and was named for the place. Hanna was opposed for the place and a legislative battle lor votes ensued. At a critical stage of the contest, it is said Mr. Sbeppard was centered upon as a compromise candidate, and that a committee named for the purpose waited upon him in an effort to induce him to become a candidate. He is said to have declined the offer, stating he bad promised to give his support to Hanna and therefore could not vio late his promise. The funeral of Mr. Sheppard took place Friday afternoon at 2 o'clock from his late home in West Alexan dra. The Masonic lodge was in charge. The Rev. Frank Brubaker was the officiating minister. Members of the Preble County Bar association met Friday morning in the courtroom in the courthouse in Eaton and named Judge ATC. Risinger, Elam Fisher and P. A. Because of his fine military record in the Civil war and his knowledge of military affairs, the late Mr. Sheppard served as chairman of the selective service draft board of Preble county during the World war. had held numerous positions of trust and honor in the county,- He was 77 years old at the time of his death. Plaintiff seeks partition of lot 15 in the village of Gratis, she claiming a half interest in the realty as a daughter of the late Sarah Brubaker, who also was the mother of Brower. He is entitled to half the realty Mrs. Giant avers Brower has been in exclusive control of the real estate since the death of their stepfather, George Brubaker, about a year ago.
