COUNTRY DAYS
The Clarke's always did things thoroughly. A country weekend might usually be a Saturday to Monday affair, they added a day to each end of It, and then decided it was best to go Thursday night, bo they might have all day Friday to enjoy themselves. Had the weather been better, Mrs. Clarke would already have settled herself in the remodeled farmhouse where she had spent most of her early married life and where she now lived only in Summer. Mrs. Clarke was torn between her love of the country, and thcpleasure she found in "running" the affairs of the tenants and workmen on her husband's small estate, and the more social life of the city, where half a dozen friends were apt to drop in every afternoon for tea and an hour's friendly gossip. She adored- tramping the hills in an old tweed with a dog at her heels, but after a time she was more than willing to desert this for town life and black silks with jet tassels. "I've lived in the country so much I hate it at home," Pan said, looking from the window of the train as they ran by green hills patterned with . flowering hedges, and past toy size villages with quaint little cottages clustered together in protected spots. 'But this is so happy and pretty and different. It isn't like the country, it's like a picture book." Everyone laughed at this, and Ned who was in the carriage of the train with them gave Pan an amused glance. Ned had been brought up with some cousins and sisters who called the country "common" and considered the only scenery lay in Switzerland and the only city was either Paris or Rom". He appreciated doubly Pan's appreciation and her whimsical twist of mind. The arrived after dusk at the ".farmhouse" whose ancient kitchen had been turned into a living room, and was filled with oak beams black from age, against which brass "horse charms" and old candlesticks gleamed in the ligkt. "The best part of the place !s the music room," Mrs. Clarke said, leadhv, the way to a stone chamber with a vaulted roof and tapestry lined walls. A modern grand piano stood in a corner, deep cushioned chairs and old oak benches with red velvet tasseled pi'.lows stood around the wall. "This is real Tudor," Mrl. Clarke went on. "It's the only part of a fine old Eizabethan mansion now left1 built about 1600. Some of the stone of the ruin went into the farmhouse.
wans, tnis was used to keep the cream cool, until I was married. I had it joined to the house and found these old benches in one of the- barns." Pan smiled at this, remembering the good old furniture stored and neglected in the ancient, original farm house at home. -which first brought her in contact with Gloria and with these people. "All the world is filled either with people who love old things, or people who hate them and prefer new and I like only the first sort." Pan observed touching a bit of old tapestry gentlv with her fingers. "Then you must visit my familr

Should the man place the engatre-rrx-nt ring on the finger again after the wf-ding ring has been put on? If he does not, what should be done with the engagement ring during th ceremony? ' ANXIOUS Invite the wedding guests verbally. Invitations are not necessary. Wear your engagement ring on the other hand during the ceremonv and afterwards put it back on the finger it is meant for. This is not dono during the ceremony, however. Dear Mrs. Thompson: There is to be a surprise birthday party on a boy friend of mine. All of us have ben requested to bring a present which does not cost over fifty cents. What would you suggest for me to take? THANK YOU You might buy linen and make the boy a handkerchief, because you could not buy a finished one that is good at that price, or you might make him a box of candy. If he plays cards a deck of cards would be an acceptable gift.

You'd adore It " "Yes, he has the ruined arch of an old abbey in the garden," Mr. Clarke said "That's about 1300. There's age for you " To Pan It was like fairyland. They dined late from a heavy old oak table that once was in a monastery, attended
by the smartest of butlers and the
most correct of maids. Frankie was taken to bed by a girl with apple red cheeks who might have stepped from the rustic chorus of an operetta. At bedtime a ladies maid appeared to ask if She COUld heln her The annlo

I never met anyone quite like her," Pan told Ned the next day as they went for a long tramp over the hills." "You know, I was just thinking that about you," he answered impusively. "Aunt's been telling me a little about you I thought you were marvelous enough to stay here alone with Frankie aren't you lonely?" Pan looked out over the hills they had climbed to a point where one might glimpse the sea, miles off and silvery blue in the sun. Rolling green hills, sun and blue sky, warmth and a sweet wind, thatched t ittages in the hollows and flocks of sneep in the meadows, and a friend beside her behind her a dull and cheerless past, barren of friendship, barren of pleasure, the sense of having been saved from a mistake. "No, I'm not lonely," she answered. But she was conscious suddenly that
