MANNERS IN GERMANY ARE VERY DIFFERENT

FROM CUSTOMS HERE , s By MIRIAM TEICHNER Berlin While discussing European and International finance, why not hold a subsidiary or auxiliary conferenceconference on International manners? While a manner means one thing to one country and another thing to another, there is fertile ground for misunderstandings. It is time an international code be arrang'ed by which all - the world can be joined in one great brotherhood ot mutual manners. If a young woman in America meets a young man she likes, she may, with propriety, delicately hint that a call from him would be welcomed. It may rot be strictly proper, but it is done. But if a German girl would try it she would be utteily ruined. She may feel that her soul is calling to bis, and that they are doomed to love each other, but she must keep silent The young man must ask to call. Young Man Asks. If he doesn't, when the party or ball ends they are irrevocably and forever parted. If the young man asks to call, however, and permission is granted there is a definite social technique in which he must be perfect. The call nnjst unalterably be made on the following Sunday, between 12 and 2:00 o'clock in the afternoon. It is not at all necessary that the young woman be there. Modesty and

delicacy of feeling tnay, with perfect

social propriety in fact, have prompted her to so and feed the squirrels in the

park. However that may be, the young man, having left his bouquet and his

'cards, has fulfilled his. social duty and

is thenceforward eligible to invitations

from the young woman. - - His meetings with the young w

man thereafter are carried on strictly within the family circle. If he wants to take her to the theater or p concert he does so only with a chaperone, and

if he invites her to a dance he doea

not call for her and escort her there

tut meets her at the dance, she having

been duly delivered .or brought thereby a parent, relative or maid. .Kise Her Hand

And then there is that matter of hav

ing one's hand kissed. When an

American girl is introduced to a youn; man, she follows one of two possible

courses. Kitber she bow distantly

and murmurs a. polite nothing, or she puts out a pleasant, chummy little

hand, with a sort of "Howdy, Bill" ex

pression of the face, and grips the

hand of the other party to the trans action.

In Germany, it's nothing like that at

all. The young man enters Into th'i

business of being introduced with b

full determination to kiss the hand of the girl, with whom he is being made acquainted. If he stretches" out hi3 hand for hers, and gropes vainly In tha

air for it, being met. instead, with only

a bow, he feels snubbed, and more

over he feels ridiculous.

'TWAS JUST THE SAME : WITH GIRLS IN 1868

(From the Detroit News)

"The girl of the period is a creature

who dyes her hair and paints her face a? the first articles of. her personal relicion: whose sole idea of life is

plenty of fun and luxury; -and. whose i!res is the object of such thought and intellect as she possesses." wrote" Mrs. Lvnn Linton in the Saturday Review of March 14, 186S. "Her main endeavor-is to outlive her neighbors in the extravagance of fashion. . "Love, indeed, is the last thing she thinks of, and the least of the dangers besetting her. : Love in a cottage, that seductive dream which used to vex the heart and disturb the calculations of prudent mothers, is now a myth of past ages. The legal barter of herself for so much money, representing so much dash, so much luxury, and pleasure thafis her idea of marriage; the only idea worth entertaining."

ate one of the "cellar wine drinker." Kirby states that the larvae of this

little fly,, whose diet he could attest

from his own observations, disdains to feed on anything but wine or beer. There are bees and flowers whose random meetings result in the same curious phenomenon. On the single dahlias and gaillardias of the garden

bees are often to be seen in the same maudlin state, and these bees . are more frequently of the black and yellow banded kind. If you take such a bee off the gafflaxdia the insect will remain in your hand, indulging In quaint antics or simply trembling in every member. Presently, however, it will recover and fly off straight to

another gaillardia flower and in a very short time is again la its former state of imbecility. I

INFORMATION" DESK CLERKS REFLECT SPIRIT OF THEIR CHIEFS

NEW YORK. One generally can tell what sort of a' reception he will get from the man he wants to see in a large concern by the way he is greeted at the information desk, says a man j whose business takes him to the executive headquarters of many and varied concerns .in this city. The employes seem to reflect the spirit of their chief. Employes and heads of great corporations are more courteous, as a rue, than those of small ones. In one big concern, whose president has an Irish name, every one who comes in contact with the public is obviously of Irish descent.'. The caller is greeted with hearty and unaffected courtesy. One may not be able to see the president, but his secretary, or whoever brings back word, seems genuinely sorry, and, as likely as not, suggests that the caller try again at a certain hour another day when perhaps the executive will be less busy. All "office boys" in another great corporation are colored men, some of them white-haired, for the concern is an old one as corporate age is reckoned downtown and has a number of employes on its retired list. The office attendants are highly efficient and polite. The careless office boy at the information desk is being supplanted by intelligent middle-aged . men in many large offices. If the visitor is not sure whom be ought to see he will be tactfully questioned and finally directed to the proper officer. The big banks in the financial district have spent a great' deal of effort in trying to make courtesy a twenty-four-hour habit with their employes, and with good results. Competition for new accounts is so keen that the clerks who -come in contact with customers are models of patience and tact even under trying circumstances. "The office girl" is not far from a total loss," says an active business man. "One large concern that I visited recently was typical of others in my experience. I explained to the girl at the information desk that I was seeking certain information and that I thought Mr. Blank could give it to me. She. sent for that gentleman's secretary and I explained to her what I wanted. When I had finished, she said, 'Mr. Blank is in conference. Will any one else do?' "I invited her to suggest some one, and'' she said she would send for Mr. Smith's secretary. When she appeared, she asked, 'Just what did you want to see Mr. Smith about?' and I explained again. She disappeared and presently another young woman who said Ehe was Mr. "Jones secretary came out and asked what I wanted to see

Richard Coeur-De-Lion's Heart Still Preserved (From the Detroit News) The last English sovereign to have the heart removed from the body after death, and to be separately preserved in a silvr urn, was "good Oueen Anns "

The hearts of her sister, Queen Mary and the latter's consort, King William

or manes u and of Queen Eliz

abeth, are also cared for in Westminster Abbey. The heart of Richard Coeur-de-Lion is still in the custody and care of the canon and chapter of the Cathedral of Rouen. It is under his recumbent ef-

i'sj, uiii ancient lane, and was brought to light after the lapse of six centuries, in 183S, enclosed in caskets of lead and of silver, and withered almost to the semblance of an autumn leaf.-

We Commemorate the Life of a Great American

Today is the anniversary of the birth of Theodore Roosevelt. On this day tribute will be paid to the memory of our former leader the man who when living so ably governed the destinies of our republic. One of the oustanding characteristics of Theodore Roosevelt was his COURAGE. In days like these, when timidity and doubt mark the thoughts and actions of so many, recollection of his tenacity and fearless outlook on life, and emulation of his undaunted and undoubted optimism and courage, may not be amiss.
