AN

EXCITING EVENT

Chapter 84 So Pan wrote to George. Bnt she had to think of a reason to write, without giving him the real one. It seemed odd to her that It was necessary to go through much of life Inventing reasons for doing things, the doing of which was amply Justified by the reasons that existed! It didn't in the least agree with the principals of her honest, straight forward little sou'. But she recognized that she coudn't sit down and say that Santley was in London, and here was warning to t George! y "Tact," Gloria had once remarked, "is a half way station between truth and falsehood. It's neither one nor the other, it's neutral and useful as welL" So. Pan wrote a tactful letter. "Frankie and-1 know our way all around the city by this time,' she said this was an exaggeration, she .realized. "We've been sight seeing by ourselves, Gloria has been so very busy." This was true enough. "Today we found the most charming old square and church" and here followed and enthusiastic description of St. Bartholomew's with its remnants of Norman work, its early Gothic, its beautiful antiquity, set just off the swirl of London's City district, and in part of her busy wholesale food traffic. "So I'm tired this evening, she went on, seeing her way into a tactful disclosure of his rival's appearance, "and I'm staying home. I was supposed to dine with Gloria and Santley and go to the theatre Santley 13 in London again, did you know?" This was mak- ) ing it almost too casual, but Pan did not know that "As soon as possible after Mr. Games' death, he went to New York. We must have passed In mid-ocan Isn't that odd? Anyway, he found Gloria's banking adress in London there, and so found her hotel when he came back. He looks exactly like his pictures, only thinner " she paused and wondered how she could end this warning gracefully. She sat for a long time puzzling, a slim little child figure, with the light on her smooth brown hair and the small thin hands that had worked so hard and still showed traces of it She was still sitting there, but rather thinking of George than of her letter, when the door opened and Gloria came In. So she wrote hastily: "When do you expect to come back? We mis'? you," and sealed her letter as Gloria slipped off her cape. "It was most amusing, really an excellent plot for farce," Gloria said. "What was It about?" Pan always wanted to know the plots of the plays ( Gloria saw. But Gloria seemed rather vague about It. No farce ever has a coherent plot, too much depends upon minute details. But Gloria's description was . quite un-understandable. The letter went, but there was no answer. Pan waited a week and worried. ' ! Then she received a post cart from Dijon "Glad you are enjoying yourself. Love, George." The new address accounted for the delay the message may or may not have been in answer to her letter. She couldn't tell, so went on worry-

lng! She wrote another letter, and almost urged him to come back. Gloria meantime, worked hard during the days, wedging to, as usual, an enormous amount of social activity. The English woman, Mrs. Clarke, who had taken a fancy to Pan, asked them to dinner Pan often went out with Santley and Gloria, and often decided to stay at the hotel ' alone, so they could be together. As the days passed, they began staying in themselves, sitting in Gloria's little living room after dinner, while Santley smoked and watched Gloria, and Gloria chattered. The only tactful thing Pan could think of doing, was to go to bed as there was only one living room and she wanted to leave them alon. There were long periods when she could hear only Gloria's voice, running along with quick fire of comment and gossip she did so well and sometimes long periods of silence. Once when she could not sleep, she heard, after a silence and a low question by Santley: "My dear, my dear, when yon came it as all right" And silence and she knew then that they were in love and had acknowledged it. Gloria's attempt at simple friendliness was over Santley's little anoyed defense against her attitude was over. The girl who was always vague and had existed mostly in Gloria's imagination: did not entef into their lives at all. Yet next morning Gloria breakfasted and left without saying a word. But that afternoon she came with Santley. Her eyes were laughing, but her mouth, while it laughed too, was tender. "We're going to dessert you for a few days," she 6aid. "We were married an hour ago." And Pan felt both dismay and happiness. Monday What George Wrote

Heart Problems

Dear Mrs. Thompson: I have children in school and someway they get lice. I have got rid of the lice, but it seems as If I cannot get the dead nits off their hair. What will take them off? "ANXIOUS PARENT. Wash the children's hair, and while It is wet comb-it with a fine dandruff comb. This will remove most of the nits, and the rest can be picked off easily while they are wet.
