BETTER HOME WEEK TURNS THOUGHTS TO VALUE OF OWNERSHIP It Is true, every living soul loves a home. No matter how humble and even though it be In the remote part of the earth, there comes a longing to go back. When we think of half a century ago of what was then a beautiful place and compare it with the modern homes, we realize our advancement.

It 1b only 60 years since the bath tub was put Into use. At that time it was considered a luxury and heavily 'taxed. An effort was made to legis-

; lata the bath tub out of use.

Much stress la laid on the home today and rightfully bo. The success of

man depends largely on home environ

ment, and the housewife has within her power to add happiness to the

family's life.

We may meet many men whose offices, desks and business places ap

pear not a fit place to work, yet these

very men take pride In the home. It -need not be an extravagant, elaborate . home. We often find more comfort in

the little homey home. Shows Their Value.

"Better Home Week" emphasizes the necessity and advantage of a healthy, comfortable dwelling, in which utility

of structure and design, coupled with

' Interior decorations of all sorts and i conveniences for the housewife, create ! an ideal atmosphere and a place where

cares are laid aside.

The value of a home cannot be overemphasized, say students of social problems. Ownership of a home, or

pride in possession, is n tie that binds

a person to this city, makes him anx

ious for its Improvement, and helps

conserve the fine elements of civilization.

The Instinct of improving his home life led the early pioneers to settle vast stretches of territory where they

might erect their little cabins and fash

ion for themselves many of the household utensils, the furniture and the im

plements needed to cultivate the land. Progress of Homes.

Soon th little cabin gave way to a

better home built of lumber found on

the farm, and this in turn gave way

to the handsome structures which to

day are rightly called American homes. The advance that has been made in providing useful, time and labor saving devices of all kinds in the home, as well as in furnishing the structure which has been built along scientific lines for comfort, is remarkable. Often the modern forgets that his grandfather knew nothing of the conveniences which today are necessities. All of IhMn enhance the home. "Better Home Week" should impress upon us the value of ownership, and pride in maintaining the home which we rent. Good homes are an asset to the community. A good citizen takes as much pride in his home as he dos in his own personal appearance. Beauty, comfort, convenience, efficiency these are what all Americans want In their homes. "Better Homes Week" will show their value and how they are to be attained.

BETTER HOMES WEEK"

Few cities in the state have felt the need of more and . better homes more than has Richmond. For several .years it has been a problem to find living quarters for our citizens, and people were constantly being crowded into undesirable places merely because there was no local agency to take over the matter of the construction of new homes. Now thirty-two new homes have been erected in tho Wrightland Addition; several of them are being furnished complete, and will be open to the inspection of our citizens during the week of October 22 to 29, inclusive. This enterprise is worthy of our commendation because there is much ' inspiration offered prospective home owners and home furnishers. This example of modern home building i3 one that has long been needed in Richmond, aiding the housing condition and encouraging permanent citizenship. It deserves the cooperation and attention of every citizen. v Our local merchants, who are co-operating with Mr. Wright in making this a complete "Better Homes Week," offer their contributions of furnishings and ideas of home outfitting that should be a source of inspiration to all home owners for better homes. Respectfully, L. A. HANDLEY, Mayor.
