ABINGTON TOWNSHIP SCHOOL'BONDS WILL SELL EASILY BELIEF

(Special to The Palladium. ABINGTON. Ind., Oct 20. Re-ad-Tertlsfng for the sale of the $25,500 bond iBsue for the erection of a new Abington township school, to be located about two miles north of this town, on the Centervllle road, la now

In progress and It la expected that

the bonds will be disposed of without

difficulty. When the bonds were first offered for sale, Beveral weeks ago, there were no bidders for the Issue

because an opinion had been given that the advertisements did not comply with legal requirement In cer

tain respects. The advertisements now being published are Bald to be In

strict compliance with the law.

A final effort to defeat the sale of the school bonds was made yesterday when a remonstrance against such ac

tion, Baid to have been signed by 12

taxpayers of the township, was filed;

.but it is understood that the remon

strance will have no weight with the state tax board, which already has au

thorized the Issuance of the bonds. Anxious to Build

The school authorities are hopeful

that the construction of the new school can be started before the first

of the year. Under the existing tax

able valuation of the township, the

anticipated cost of the building comes

within the two per cent limit Next year there will be a reduction In the township's taxable valuation and it is doubtful whether the cost of the proposed school would come within the

legal limit under the new valuation.

Wherever school consolidation has

been attempted in Wayne county considerable opposition has been encoun

tered, but nowhere was there more determined opposition than in Abington township. It has been estimated

that at least 80 per cent of the tax

payers of the township opposed the

consolidation of the schools because it would Involve the erection of a new

school to take the place of the three

now in use. Those who approved of the school consolidation contended that a majority of the taxpayers who had children attending school wanted

a modern, centrally located building,

and, it is understood, that argument had considerable Influence with the

state tax board. ' Still Resent Site After the state board had authorized the sale of school bonds, EL J.

Wright township trustee, and a few others proposed to erect the new

school a short distance west of the town of Abington In a section without good roads. That started another tight and after it was shown that if the- site favored by Wright was se

lected it would be necessary to con

struct an improved road, it was finally

decided to select a site north of Abington. Quite a number of residents of the town of Abington have not yet

become reconciled to the prospect of having the school located elsewhere than in town. They advance the argument that a large number of the

school children live in or close to the

town and that practically all the im

proved roads in the township lead to

Abington, but the school authorities believ the site they have selected Is more desirable because it is more centrally located than Abington. Used Many Years The school in the town of Abington has been in use many years and during the war It was condemned by the county health officer. He finally consented to permit ts operation under a temporary permit because at that time the expense of providing a new school would have been prohibitive. The Abington school still operates under a temporary permit The two other schools of the township are in better condition than the one in the town, but the county health officer states that it would bo a good policy to abandon them. When the new school has been completed it will be the only one In the township which will be operated.
