A DINNER PARTY
Chapter 82 While she saw that Frankie "had hi3 simple evening meal and was bathed and put to bed, Pan was naturally very curious about the talk in the other Toom. She had closed the door, ot course, as she went out but she heard faintly the steady low murmur of th? man's voice and now and then an interruption, a question or remark from Gloria. But Frankie, once in his small pajamas and diminutive bath robe, always had a farewell visit with his mother. Pan thought of breaking this habit tonight; she wanted to give Santley his chance alone with Gloria.
But children are creatures of habit. "I always do ay goodnight to her,
and, I'm going to now," Frankie sail stoutly. "Besides I can say goodnight to Santley too. I like him, rawther.' Being an imitative monkey, he had picked up the broad "a" of his new playmates and used their "rawther" on every occasion. So he went to the little living So in he went to the little living room that divided the two bedrooms and made up a cozy, little hotel suite, and prolonged his goodnight with all the ingenuity only a six year old possesses. One interruption! When he was iu bed, as they had the same room, Pan had to return to the living room, or May where she was which meant that Frankie would stay awake. She decided he had better lose some sleep than have Gloria interrupted again. So she pulled a screen around his bed, and took as much time as possible folding and putting away his clothes. She
couldn't find anything to do then but to dress herself for dinner, though she was sure she would dine alone that
evening at the hotel, while they went out. Then Gloria opened the door. She looked tired.
"Clever little creature, aren't you?" ph whispered. Then aloud. Come
along In, Santley wants us to dine with him."
"Oh that's charming I'm afraid I
cant, though. Pan was a little con fused. "Nonsense," laughed Gloria.
"You'd better come," Santley said gravely, yet his eyes were humorous as'he looked at her. "When Gloria
makes up her mind "
"And in this case you've made, up ' yours too," Gloria said, with a double
meaning lost on Pan then, "so the poor
child has no chance at all. "Run along Santley, we'll take a taxi and join you
at the restaurant in an hour.
"Well?" Pan asked when he had
gone.
"Well!" Gloria echoed enigmatically. "Wait till I've had a bath and I'll tell you all about it while I'm dressing."
"Now I suppose your romantic little soul had him proposing the fiist chance you so kindly and obviously gave him to do so," she said a little later, as she wound her black hair into a knot high on her head. "I suppose you never gave him a chance," Pan answered. "I asked him to tell me about Frank which was the most -important
thing, my chiW. A proposal of marriage is not likely to follow that sort of talk." 1 "I'm sorry," Pan apologized. "Anyway, there's certainly nothins
romantic in his attitude one gets over
these fancies, Gloria went on, determined to smash her carefully built up romance. "But I'm glad I saw him, he's laid the ghost that's haunted me for years. For that's what Frank has been. A ghost is a creature who ought to be dead, but who isn't and that's what Frank has been. He's been dead to me for more years than I can say I think sometimes from the first months of our marriage, when I first knew what he really was like. "Then there were years of trying to ignore the failure our life together was bound to be and my terrible fear that Frankie would inherit a few of hia father's undesirable characteristics.' Her voice was bitter again, and her face nervously tight and old. The gold cloth dress she was slipping into only made her seem worse by its own barbaric gaiety. Pan wished she would put on something quieter suggested a gray taffeta and had a laugh as her reward. "Do I look like a witch? Well, I feel like one, so never mind. But to go on I've said Frank was dead to mo
from the moment I left. That's why
I couldn't go through the farce of wear
ing mourning but no one expected it. Well, I've heard all about it now, the last five years of his life and his
death. Poor Frank!" .
She went into details. Frank Gates
had-become what all men of his type
drift to for they all seem alike. Some
times he wrote and sold an article to
a newspaper or magazine, he lived heaven knows where, in some dingy garret, he never took anyone home, so few knew where it was. He spenc what he earned or had on nice clothes,, he kept up a modest club, and borrowed money wherever he could, and drank more and more every month. He went from one set of friends to another less desirable, and another less desirable than that. Finally Santley found hivn, sent him to a hospital naid for him there for months and was

out like the ragged end of a candle. "And that's that!" said Gloria, rising from her dressing table. "Let's get a taxi." But as they entered the restaurant. Pan watched the amazing change that had taken place in three second in her friend. Gloria with slightly fiusher cheeks and sparkling eyes, with her little head held as only she could hold it, walked smillingly to her table She leoked about 20. Tomorrow Watching
Heart Problems
Dear Mrs. Thompson: I am a young girl and am broken-hearted. My folks object to my boy frif nds. I have one
friend whom I love and I know he loves
me. I want to get married just to
leave home and feel at times I will
have to. A boy brake up my home.
Will you please tell me something
to whiten the skin?
MINNIE Q.
To get married in order to leave home would be a very foolish thing
to do. Your parents have your inter
ests at heart and you should appreciate the fact even if they do seem a bit unreasonable m regard to your boy
friends. Remember that if a boy
broke up your home they have reason to be suspicious. Try to be patient
and sweet and see if giving your moth
er your confidence doesn't encourage her to put more faith in you. A teaspoonful of the tincture of benzoin to an ounce of rosewater forms a well-known lotion which is excellent for Thitening the skin.

Adamson Law Defended
By Lecturer Speaking On Railroad Problem Charles W. Maier, non-partisan lecturer, on the road for the past two
years telling of the railroads men's
side of the Adamson law story, earn that widespread ignorance of the Adamson law's provision was the basis of most of the' opposition-to It. Mr. Maier spoke in the high school auditorium, Wednesday evening. Previous to the passage of this law,
10 hours work for a 100 mile run was
the basic day's work on the railroad,
he said." The law provides an eight hour day for a hundred mile run, bu. does not provide for overtime for all
over eight hours. On a 150 mile run, overtime does not start until after 12 hours and on a 125 mile run not until
after 10 hours. Railroad men were raised in pay July 20, 1920, $618,000,000 acording to the speaker. In order to bring in this additional revenue, freight rates were increased $1,500,000,000. Two year,-, later, freight rates were reduced $400,000,000 and the rail men's pay wa?, decreased $558,000,000. In other words the railroads are now receiving $1,100.000,000 more than they were, and the men have received on increase only $60,000,000, he said. Handle More Tonnage Eight times as much tonnage is handled by the modern fireman and engineer as was bandied by the trainmen of 28 years ago, said Mr. Maier. Arthur J. Lovell, Republican, representative of the rail brotherhoods a
Washington opened his talk by quoting statistics which showed 17,000 new millionares during the war. ' "This is the richest nation in the world, yet the per capita weath is only $162, while our enighbor on the north, Canada, can point to a per cap
ita wealth of $338, said Mr. Lovell. "We are piling up fortunes for a few men. but the mass of the people are growing poorer." DR. PAUL S. REINSCH ILL IN HOSPITAL AT SHANGHAI SHANGHAI, Oct. 19.
