ELECTRIC CURRENT CONSUMPTION SHOWS . GROWTH III INDIANA

All Over Indiana

(By Associated Pretys)

INDIANAPOLIS. Ind., Oct. 19 The rise of electric current In Indiana

ior ngnung ana other purposes

Is growing rapidly, according to Chas

O. R. Murphy, a local electrical

expert. It has been estimated that

one-fourth of the homes in Indiana re

ceive light services from electric companies, traction companies and

municipal plants, it was said.

Mr. Murphy, who is a member of

the Indiana committee on pulbic Titil

ity information, which is co-operating with the national electric light association in a campaign to "electrify America." ascribes the recent growth

m part to the public service com

mission. "Thousands of Indiana

homes situated outside the city limits

have obtained electric facilities be

cause the public service commission is In position to cause the electric

utilities to enDnly service beyond the

borders of the cities," Mr. .Murphy said. Companies Finance Work The present program, however, Is to carry current into the homes of the cities and to accomplish this object, many of the companies are financing contract "work for prospective customers,' It wag said. In ! South Bend, the electric company 'pays the contractor who does the wiring, and permits the customer to rpay for the work In 12 monthly lnistalhnentft. At Muncle, a census has Ibeen aken of all the tmwlred homes land a card index made of the reult. Here, as in South Bend, the 'Company pays the contractor, and permits the customer to repay in installments. The same 'plan is in use in Kokomo. - A. record Is claimed at Marlon,

where it la assured that 100 per cent kf the posfble users of electric cur-

fcrent are obtaining electricity for

light. In that city, -wire men were feut out to make a house to nouse (canvass, with authority to wire moms jln any house with drop and concealed

; wiring free of charge. The result was that many new customers took

service and installed electrio appara

tus of various kinds, it was said.

Electric leaders in Indiana estimate that of all the homes using

electric current, 70 per cent have elec

trio irons, twelve and one-half per ent are equipped with electric toast

ers, 10 per cent ' With heaters andl

per cent with grills, Electric op

erators report that because of the

shortage the demand for various electric appliances is larger in Indiana

than ever before.
