FAMOUS ARCHITECT TELLS PRINCIPLES OF HOME BUILDING

PAGE ELEVEN

Donn Barber, of the advisory council of the Better Homes in America campaign, has just returned from his twentieth visit to Europe. Mr. Barber is one of America's most famous architects. He was the first American to graduate from the Beaux Arts in Paris and is a Fellow of the American Institute of Architects. "I am glad to come home to find the Better Homes Campaign well started," said Mr. Barber yesterday, "for every time that I return to the United States I am impressed by the lack of beauty and permanence of our homes. Of course this lack is due to the fact that we are a young and growing nation; but it would be a very happy thing if we should soon develop the instinct for the home which the French

for example, have to such a great de

gree. "Europe admires the United States

for its character: they think over

there that we are world-beaters, and we are; but there are European qual

ities which we never approach. We

will have to grow up to them with the years. Home Instinct Strong. "Among the French the first instinct of every individual is to possess a home, and the first adult activity of the individual in his life is to start out to get a home. What they want is not magnificence it is shelter, apnroDriate and suitable. In startinz out

to get it they take count of their class and station and do not aspire beyond it. Here in this country it seems to me everybody puts off getting a home

until he becomes more prosperous, so that his home will reflect his success and not himself. Americans put off buying a house until they can get a grand one. We require comfort and efficiency and convenience or the material things that come by those names and are unwilling to start to make a home until, with a phrase that everybody uses, we can 'have it right' means something very often over our heads and beyond our means. "In England they take as much pride in the back of the house as they do in the front of it, and as much pride in the one plant growing there as if there were many. Opposes Ugliness. "I think that the Better Homes Campaign is going to teach people to hate ugliness as they should. We in America seem to be able to get along without beauty. The American small town is frequently an ugly thing. Sometimes only a very little is needed to transform it; a simple vine, a screen of shrubbery, or, in the house, a little simplicity, a little -wall space, instead of the cluttered-up effect that we get from our passion to possess many things. "The Better Homes Campaign will preach simplicity. One of the most perfect things I ever saw was a room in the house of a Japanese in which there was one table. On the table was a single crystal vase, and In it a tiny bunch of violets. Every violet was perfect. The crystal vase and the table, too, were perfect. It was the

YOUNGSTOWN STEEL PLANT ESTABLISHES NEW RECORD YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio, Oct. 10. A world's record for steel ingot production by a 12-inch furnace plant was claimed by the Brier Hill Steel company here today. joy in the one perfect thing that made

it all so lovely.

"I am very much Impressed by the rebuilding of the French towns. The people have got together and agreed

on a certain cnarmmg ana necessary uniformity. The towns are being built with one straight street; there are rows of small houses and little gardens. They are all simple, but they are all substantial. When the French people live in them, they will become individual, but as a whole they will belong to the country that they are set in. We must learn, too, to build our homes for security, with a lasting simplicity. We must learn that magnificence is not nearly so beautiful as suitability. In Europe, houses seem to have "grown out of the ground they belong to it. Here, they seem to have been dropped down anywhere. In rebuilding the towns in the devastated districts the French people from sentiment and love are building the same

sort of houses that have fitted into the landscape ever since their ancestors built them. They are bigger and better and cleaner houses, but their character remains. The courts are bigger and the stairs are wider, but the contour and proportions are the same. It is a delight to see growing out of the misery of war a freshness that revives, without changing, the fine old things."
