Pandora Nicholson is so very ehy that meeting people, or being with any but her own family, is a positively painful experience. She lives as a "poor relation" with her aunt Maude and Uncle Peter, and their daughter, the popular Gladys. Her' own father, gentle, whimsical, restless, impractical, lives and works there too all ol them in the little town of Norris City. Pandora is so often told she is no good, that she becomes more shy and self-conscious. She makes one friend only, Morton Newberry, an earnest., awkward lad, and she loves him deeply for his friendliness to her. Then Gladys, who has her choice of all the boys in town, decides that she wants
.Morton, and marries him. Pandora is heartbroken. Gloria Gates, an interior decorator from New York, whom she had met, sends for her to come to the city and look after her little son, Frankie. In the city among kindlier people. Pan begins to find herself. She fancies herself in love with George Ridgeway, whom she thinks in love with Gloria. Gloria receives a cable saying her husband is dead, just as they are starting for Europe. They arrive in London. Pan thinks Gloria in love with Santley Collins, who lives there. THE NEW CITY Chapter 73 Little by little Pan worked it out for herself. She knew now, at least, why Gloria was so anxious about a second cable. She expected some word from Santley, not about Frank, that was all told in his first mesage. But some word, some sign that the old feeling still lived, that he was still in love. "Not a real declaration of affection," Pan thought to herself. "That would be impossible so soon. It's not a matter of convention, of course I suppose it's just the good taste of the thing." Pan, having broken away from a family who were ruled by convention rather than intelligence, was now terribly afiaid she mighty make any judgments of life by convention. So she sought to back up everything she thought or did by intelligence. "Still." she decided, "he'll soon know that Gloria is in town they will have all sorts of friends in common." That, as it happened, was not true. Gloria had lived in almost every other part of the world but London, here she had but one or two friends. Santley knew an entirely different set of people, mostly men in his own profession, and club men. "Of course he must still be in love v.ith her," the girl decided, turning about in her berth restlessly. "And of course, she'll hunt him up. She want? to see him, and she's so impulsive." Then she began feeling sorry for George. For if Santley was in love with Gloria, if Gloria cared for him more than George but did she? Pan wasn't sure but if she did, of course, poor George was quite left out. She went to sleep fe'eling very sorry indeed for George. When she woke, it was with a curious feeling that something was wrong, at least, something was quite different from the way it had been the night before. Frankie, peering down from his berth above hers, explained it. "The engines have stopped, we're there." he announced. And that was it, the ship had pulled Into Cherbourg, and dropped anchor, the stillness woke her, as she was used . to motion. t , tannic i iiri aa x ft u . 1 ntj were going some place, he neither knew nor cared where. The quiet boat meant arrival. So Pan dressed him and herself as hurriedly as possible and they went out in the early morning to see the sun making rose hued clouds and the mist masses of lovely blue colors, over a dim and picturesque city. As the sun warmed, the mist cleared, the red and green lights winked out on the ends of the big breakwaters. The town became clearer across the harbor, beyond were sand dunes and fields, with now and then a church spire rising from a cluster of roofs. "They look like my toy village." Frankie observed, hanging on the rail. Cherbourg passengers were hurrying about finishing an incrediably early breakfast, finding luggage, getting on board the tender. Huge bags ofj

"I think I'll wire we're in the second section," said Gloria suddenly and was out of the carriage and off to the telegraph office. "Whom did you wire : George ask - ed on her return, very dignified and very correct in grammar. "The man in the moon," Gloria answered saucily. Pan was glad. It was all right then, Santley would meet the train. Gloria at last had sent him word she was coming. How sur - prised he would be and how glad! Rubincam She fancied him at his office when the wire came. When George got out to buy a paper she asked quickly: "Will he get it?" "Yes, in half an hour, I sent it to his office and a duplicate to his club." So it was all right! She watched Gloria smilingly, as with Frankie on her lap, she bagan a long story of how the thatched roof cottages along the railway line, were planted and grew from a hayseed. But Frankie knew better than to believe these long tales his mother spun for him, he was more serious than she. They reached the station at last other people were met, and kissed and went away to gether. Gloria's eyes searched the crowd but no Santley appeared. Tomorrow Exp'orations Beauty Chats By Edna Kent Forbes KRAI. rvs - Use perfume sparingly. The love of perfume is born in every woman handed down to her from innumerable generations of female ancestors who had discovered the curious effect that certain odors have upon the nerves and the emotions. I wonder who was the first woman to find out that certain perfumes made her more attractive in the eyes of men? Certainly in ancient times the wealthier and more beautiful the woman the heavier the odor she carried about with her. She literally walked in a perfumed cloud. Really good perfumes cost enormous amounts today, and cheap perfumes, of course are never worth the buying. Perfumes unfortunately are hard to make at home since the proper blending of- the various oils, spices and tinctures is a complicated process. However there are one or two simple formulas which you might try. Pure Extract of Pink. Oil of Pink 1 ounce Rectified spirit 1 pint Mix and agitate these until they are thoroughly blended. Here is a good imitation of Extract of Violets Bruised cinnamon l1. ounces Cloves ounce Rectified spirit 1 pint Let this stand in a warm dark cupboard for a week, shaking it up frequently, decant, into a fresh bottle. These are the two simplest formulas I know. A fragrant jar of dried flower petals can be made by any woman who has a garden. Such a jar gives a delicate perfume to a room all the winter long. A layer of salt and cinnamon should be sprinkled over every layer of petals. A. P. Any stimulating treatment such as dashing cold water over the chest followed up by brisk rubbing will build up the muscular tissue and make the skin firm; therefore, this would either reduce or enlarsre as the case required. An English Type House of Charm
The quiet charm of the English country home has been well expressed in the artistic suburban home which is shown here. From the broad walk and sun-lit entrance to the quaint chimney pots and graceful gables the architect has combined a distinctive grace with a modern type of permanent building. The main entrance has been placed at the side in order to give the full width of the house to the living room. The broad roof above the doorway is broken by an attractive gable and the main chimney which serves the living room fireplace and the main heating plant. Another pleasing gable on the other side extends the bedroom and is trellised for vines while the tidy back porch is enclosed with a neat lattice. The walls of the house shown are of hollow tile construction covered with Portland cement stucco and the ideas of permanence and freedom from upkeep are further exemplified in the paneled windows with their brick sills and concrete flower boxes. The plans shown illustrate an arrangement of five rooms all on the ground floor, but the spacious second floor may easily be converted into additional bedrooms with ample attic space remaining. The main entrance is into a vestibule and hall which opens on the dining room or the living room and at the same time gives pri vate access to another hall servin; both bedrooms, the bath room and the stairways. The bathroom is conveniently placed for both bedrooms or for additional ones upstairs. A convenient coat closet is provided in the hall as well as a linen closet, broom nook and clothes chute. Both bedrooms have ample closets and windows on both sides for sunlight and ventilation. The kitchen all white flour and eat less starchy food and more green vegetables and fruit.
