$ PROHIBITION MEASURE WANTED BY MAJORITY OF SWEDISH WOMEN
AMUSEMENTS
STOCKHOLM. Oct 3.That 57 per rent of Sweden's women favored prohibition of the manufacture and sale
of beverages containing more than two and one-fourth per cent "of alcohol, while 60 per cent of the men were against it, is now apparent from a further count of the votes cast at the recent liquor referendum which resulted in a victory for the "wets."
Sweden now will continue the pres
ent rationing system, whereby the
heads of families who prove that they are respectable and self -supporting can purchase about a gallon of strong linuor Der month, while any one can
order drinks with meals under legal
restriction at public restaurants.
The final tabulation shews that in Stockholm. Gothenburg and Malome,
as well as in other cities and suburban districts, both men and women 'were srongly against prohibition,
fwhile in the country districts in gen
eral. especially in the northern part
iof Sweden, both men and women wero has a rule in favor of prohibition. In
the capital, for example, 90 per cent of the men and 83 per cent of the wo
men were against the proposed meas
fure. This may be contrasted with a
t certain agricultural section where 90
fper cent of the women and 73 per
cent of the-men wanted two and oneI fourth per cents drinks. Interesting Condition It Is interesting to note that the imajoritles of men and women were on the same side of the question in 15 provinces out of 25, while in the oth-
(ler 10 provinces the two sides or tne
family seem to disagree In their taste for stimulants. That Swedish women do not neglect the ballot is proved by the fact that In Stockholm they outnumbered the men at the polls by more than 9,000. And the showing for the entire country was 800,000 women as against ,"938,000 men.
The voting, which took place Sunday, Aug. 27, was conducted in the most orderly fashion. Lines began to
form at nine in the morning at the
various polling places In Stockholm.
iAmong those who voted early were
.Premier Branting and bis wife, wno
'voted against prohibition, as did also
Dr. Bratt, Swedens drink dictator;
who is the originator of the present
arationlng system. Gay propaganda
was carried on throughout the day by
iboth sides by means of parades,
mounted heralds, and even airplanes.
At night the square in front of the
royal opera was packed with, thou
sands of people who amused themselves by watching the bulletins of jesults until 3 o'clock in the morning.
MURRAY VAUDEVILLE One could learn to love vaudeville with characters as gentle, refined and charming as Donna Darling appears in her "Orange Blossoms," now playing the top position of the present Murray
bill. So pleasing and beautiful that
it uplifts, and yet Interspersed with humor deftly placed, the offering is as
a fragment of some great drama or a flash from the chapter of the most beautiful spot in life. Miss Darling's
personality Illumines. She is assisted

Is the film attraction. MARVIN. WASHINGTON
Miss Kate Claxton cays she used to
judge the success of "Two Orphans
especially as a matinee bill by the
number of handkerchiefs displayed in the audience. At one time she received more Chautauqua salutes than William Jenning3 Bryan, only they were tributes of tears instead of populists! But the celebrated Louise of the stage play avers that the possibilities of crying about orphans weren't reached until David W. Griffth reIntroduced Louise and Henriette as "Orphans of the Storm," a film version of "The two Orphans" released by TJnited Artists Corporation, and now
the screen was enabled to give him more latitude for his quaint and droll
way of doing characters, and he looks with personal pride upon the success he achieved in the filming of the famous Holman Day story, "Squire Fhin,
which is playing at the Murray.
There are many exciting scenes rn
the picture. And in addition to numer
ous phases that makes it a corking good film for even the kiddies, there
are circus scenes that rapturously hold
both the old and the young."
Maclyn Arbuckle was never seen to
better advantage than in this finely-
directed, adequately staged, and by all means superbly acted picture.. "Squire

"I notice plenty of mother-and-daughter teams that come to have their first good cry together," says Miss Claxton. "Sentimental folk of all ages positively enjoy the sisters' troubles in a weepy way that doesn'l interfere at all with hearty laughing at other times at PIcard's or LaFro-
chard's antics. The shifting sunshlni and shadow have much to do with the success of the movie epic, I believe. At a performance at the Apollo theatre in New York one evening two out-of-town women exhausted their
linen supply at the end of the first act. "When Henriette faced the Reign of Terror, there was nothing for U but to cry on manly escort's shoulder or borrow his handkerchiefs. He stood this as long as he could, fishing up linens from his coat pockets and finally from his overcoat, till h? burst out: "Doggone It, why didn't you bring your own laundry? Mother always carried and even half dozen to look at Kate Claxton. How in the name of Time could you expect to cry out

MURRETTE
Maurice,' the internationally known
dancer, ', was engaged to stage the
French gavotte and other formal court dances in Norman Talmadge's latest
vehicle, "The Eternal Flame," which Is
the elaborate First National attraction
at the Murrette theatre.
A recognized authority on all dance
forms, Maurice was enthusiastic about
the intricate and inexpressibly graceful steps of the French gavotte, which he considers representative of the highest form of the formal period dances.. . - So all those who would see, the gavote as danced in the time of Louis
XVTII by the court gallants and their ladies will have an opportunity in Miss Talmadge's picture. The old fashioned waltz will also be danced in the various court ball sets, as though to contradict the atmosphere of frivolity associated with that period.
PURE BRED STOCK GOING INTO MEXICO (By Associated Press)
CHICAGO, Oct 3- Introduction of pure bred American livestock for the rehabilitation of Mexican agriculture
has begun in a systematic way, accord
ing to Guy H. Hall, director of the National Institute of Progressive Farming. B. F. Abbott, a representative
of the Mexican Auxiliary of the Livestock Registry associations of . the United States at Mexico City, writes that Mexico is stocking her vast plains
with purebreds, which probably will
give Mexico a wealth greater than her mines and oil wells, and add to the
world's food supply.
"Mexico is- a potential market for
American farm machinery, but in the! matter of tractors there is an anomaly," said Mr. Abbott. "There are a number of tractors in Mexico Pancho Villa has two but it is costly to operate them. Thi3 is because the price of gasoline Is so high. With the greatest oil fields in the world, Mexico is without refineries and gasoline is imported. "Government officials pledged that custom house difficulties at the border would be eliminated and freight rates reduced on all purebreds coming in
under the guarantee of the registry association. This includes the acceptance as final by Mexican authorities of health certificate from American
veterinarians." .F. W. Harding, secretary of the regr
istry associations and president of the American Shorthorn Breeders' association, who is in active charge of the export field for the association, is optimistic over Mexico as a market for purebreds, tractors and farm machinery, and as a market for purebreds.
