PLANS BEING PUSHED FOR ATHLETIC MEET OF PENNSY COMPANY

Chips and Slips

Plans are practically completed for handling the big Southwest regional athletic and field meet of the Pennsylvania system to be run-off on Reid field, Earlham Saturday afternoon. Included in the big meet -will be swimming events at Draver's swimming pool, golf at the Richmond Country club and tennis at the railroad yards. Champ Ball Game A baseball game will be played at 3:30 o'clock between the Ft. Wayne division team representing the Northwest region and that of the Canton, Ohio, division representing the Central region.- This game has no connection with the Southwest regional meet, but is being played here because the eagerness to win has made it nec

essary that a neutral field be secured for the game, which is a championship meeting. The winner of this game will compete for the honors of , the system against the Eastern region at the system meet which is to be held at Altoona, Pa., a week later. Golf Entries Heavy Thirty entries are now made to the golf tourney to be held at the Country club. The preliminaries will start at 8 : 30 o'clock Saturday morning and the finals will be played off in the afternoon. The players having the four lowest scores will go to the Altoona meet to compete against the regional winners. Swimming events at Draver's pool will start Saturday morning at 9 o'clock. Events are expected to be contested to the limit. Those divisions competing here Saturday are as follows: St Louis, Peoria, South Bend, Indianapolis and Louisville, of the Indiana divisions; and Columbus. Cincinnati, Richmond and Zanesville, of the Central division. Locals Lose In Tennis Richmond tennis players lost in the matches held at the east yards courts Wednesday afternoon. The following are the results of the matches which were held: William Brady, Richmond, lost to W. R. Knell, of Columbus, 6-2; 6- 1. R. Bartel and J. Rethmeyer. of Richmond lost to the Cincinnati team, 8-6; 7- 5. E. F. Dinan and L. R. Murphy, Cincinnati, defeated R. II. Lutz and M. E. ; Schenck, of Columbus, 8-6; 6-4.

While there is no intention of poking at golf too much, some of the anecdotes along this line are too good to be lost. Take the case of the woman who had her young and observant son out for a walk. They met a friend of the familv. a man who likes to be

pleasing to children. He proceeded to question the boy, a bright little fellow about five years old. "Does your papa work?" from the man. "Sure, he doe3, all the time," without hesitation. "What does he do?" and the chances are the youngster knew that the ques

tioner knew the answer. Anyhow, the boy spoke right up:

"Plays golf." N. Y. Telegraph.

Tom Davies, Rookie With Giants, Has Big Future Watch Davies next year! That's the

tip Giant fans are handing out as Tom Davies, rookie, leaves the club for the rest of the season to take up gridiron activities. Davies, obtained direct from the University of Pittsburgh, has been engaged to aid Johnny Heismann with the U. of Penn. grid squad this fall. McGraw gave his consent to Tom's early departure. Davies joined the Giants as an infielder but showed himself to be such

a bear at covering acreage m going after fly balls that Jawn may convert him to an outfielder. Tom's allaround playing and his hitting stamp him as a comer, no matter which McGraw decides to make him.

Davies won All-American positions by his work with the Pitt gridiron team.

Yesterday's Games

"Spike" Flaherty came near entering the hall of fame Wednesday. He held the Lynn nine hitless for the greater portion of the game, but Runyon, who took Jones' place, let one fly right over second base good for a single and the Gray hurler's chance was broken. At that, the Tittle hurler had the opponent bitting hard on his offerings.

They hit for the CIRCUIT Wednes day: Hamel, Indianapolis; Burns, Boston Sox; Walker, Philadelphia Ath

letics; Bancroft and Stengel, New

York Giants; Toporcer and Eottomly

Pittsburgh; Brief. Kansas City; Hill

and McCullough, Toledo.

After Indiana university had banked on the services of "Cub" Buck for coach of the grid team this year, the university officials received quite a set-back when they learned that Buck declined the offer. His excuse was that he did not want to break his present contracts. A big day of activities is expected Saturday when the Pennsy athletic meet gets under way. With track and field events at Earlham, golf at the Country club, swimming at Draver's and a ball game at the yards, the day should be fairly full.
