22 MILES OF ROAD COMPLETED BETWEEN RICHMOND, GREENFIELD

Twenty-two miles of hard surface pavement of 28 miles contracted for In three projects on the National road between Greenfield and Richmond, and 18 miles of 35 miles contracted on the same road between Indianapolis and Terre Haute, are completed, it was announced today by John D. Williams, director of the state highway commission. Most of the new pavement will be opened to traffic soon, Mr. Williams said. There remains to be built this season only six miles between Indianapolis and the Ohio line, and approximately 17 miles on the west end of the National road, it was said. Anticipating that weather conditions will permit concrete laying as late as Nov. 15, the

highway commission has expressed belief that all pavement will be laid east of Indianapolis this year. Gaps on the west end which will not be closed this year consists of three one-half mile sections separating railroad grades, and 2.2 miles at Reelesville where, by re-locating the road, two dangerous grade crossings and hazardous Reelesville Hill, will be eliminated. The Deer Creek bridge in Putnam county will not be built

until next year. Highway officials said the delay in obtaining cement because

of the railroad tangle, together with the huge earth fills necessary to build for relocation near Reelesville, are responsible for the entire National road through Indiana not being completed this year. The National road will be the first hard surface highway running across Indiana, The Hoosier State Auto association proposes to stage a big celebration when it -becomes possible to drive straight through from Richmond to Indianapolis, according to Harry K. Stormont, safety director of the Hoos
