WILL LEAD NAVY'S FORCES IN DERBY
WASHINGTON Gloria Swanson showed marked propensities as a practical joker during
the filming of "Beyond the Rocks." her
new Paramount picture showing at the Washington theatre next Sunday,
when she made Rodolph Valentino, her leading man, the butt of a practical joke which caused hearty laugh
ter. During the filming S a scene in
an Alpine tavern, Mr. Valentino, seat
ed in the dining room, finds a lace handkerchief which he learns belongs to none of the ladies in his party. Ha lifts it to his nose and is entranced by the delicious perfume, which brings back memories of a romancce ot the past. Miss swanson conspired with the property man in preparing a duplicate handkerchief in which was concealed several pieces of garlic! At the last rehearsal before shooting the scene, Miss Swanson whispered to Sam Wood, director, to note the result Slowly and with a beatific smile, Mr. Valentino lifted the dainty kerchief to his nose and then a look of
infinite disgust overspread his feat
ures, followed by one of surprise, till
the shrieks of laughter from the star and others told him it was a joke.

All the fashionable frocks and frills
of a stately house party in New York's wealthy and aristocratic clique are embodied in "Rose o' the Sea" the current First National attraction starring Anita Stewart which will be the feature at the Murrette theatre for three days commencing Thursday. The estate belongs to Peter Schuyler, the oldest living descendant of
an austere Dutch family that had its New World beginnings with the Knickerbockers and Astors. Adulterated by the incroppings of twentieth century, the house party guests
include debonnair men of affairs, a
chance adventurer and spoiled off
springs of too much wealth. Among the feminine members is Rose Eton,
a poor girl of unknown parents. Res
cued in a sea disaster she has had to fight her own way in life and has
attracted the attention of Peter Schuy ler by her charm and naiveness.
The simple settings of the house party come to an abrupt termination with a threatened suicide after the discovery of a forged check bearing Peter Schuvler's signature. Rose
tries to conceal the forgery by plac
ing herself in a position of questionable propriety: and the elder man, his
faith in the girl shaken, concedes to
her request that she be allowed to
leave by an early train.
Immediately after her departure
the amazing truth becomes known and stunned by the magnitude of the injustice he -has done the girl, Peter tries to find her but in vain. The
situation and its ensuing develop
ments provide Miss -Stewart with one
of the best vehicles she has had for
some time and can be counted upon as a guarantee of an unusually fascinating picture.
