MANY ANIMALS HAVE QUEER SENSES WHICH HUMAN RACE LACKS From, the London Daily Mail. Many animals are endowed with senses which the human race does not possess or which we completely lost during the process of evolution. One of these senses appears to he a premonition of danger. Cats and possihly other animals appear to be able to sense earthquakes before they occur. A friend who lived at Valparaiso told the writer that her cat became restless about two days before a "trembler" and would pace uneasily up and down, refusing to eat. Before the first shock was felt by any human being, the cat's hair was bristling and her ears flattened. And what are we to say about a bat when blinded was able to avoid thin wires strung about a room in which it flew? Some scientists talk sagely of "inherited instinct" a phrase which means, after all, very little. The whole problem of migration is extremely mysterious, and the more so because most migrant birds fly by night . To my "mind, the only explanation for their journeys and for those of dogs and cats which find their way home across many miles of unknown country is that they possess a sixth sense, which for lack of a better word, one might call that of "orientation." Separate Senses. Come to the insect world and here you are confronted by problems which absolutely demand the recognition of sixth, perhaps seventh, senses. Lord Avebury "flefinitely proved that ants were able to perceive Tays of light which are beyond our ken i. e., the ultra-violet rays. Also that colors affected ants in different fashion from ourselves. Other experiments prove that an ant following the trail of another ant knows: (1) Aether the path is worth traveling. (2) Which way the trailmaker was moving. (3) The exact direction in which home lies. Ants, so Lord Avebury proved, nave a well developed sense of smell, yet they have no ears. It seems probable that the sense of smell resides in the antennae, which may be .the seat of the other and to us still unknown senses. To quote Lord Avebury's own words in his "The Senses of Animals:" "We have five senses, and sometimes fancy that no others are possible. But it is obvious that we cannot measure the infinite by our own narrow limitations. We find in animals complex organs of sense, rarely supplied with nerves, but the function of which we are as yet powerless to explain." STRIKING EXAMPLE OF CROKER'S POWER (From the Detroit News) A striking instance of the far-reaching power exercised by "Bops" Croker at the height of his power is given by Gustavus Myers in his "History of . Tammany Hall." Mr. Myers says that he tried in vain to persuade any of the publishing houses in New York to issue his book. "Two of the bestknown firms wrote that they could not encourage me to submit the manuscript to them for consideration. Four others considered the publication 'in advisable,' though their readers had returned favorable recommendations. One other declined it without giving reasons. More recently, when the offer of certain responsible persons who had read the manuscript to guarantee the expense of its publication was made to a certain house, the firm replied. 'We should hardly feel warranted in locking horns with Tammany Hall.' " Eventually the cost of publication was met by subscription, and the work appeared in 1901, nearly two years after its completion. BATTLE OF THE KEGS IN DELAWARE RIVER
From the Detroit News In January, 1778, while the British occupied Philadelphia, the Americans sent kegs down the Delaware from Bordentown filled with powder and furnished with machinery which, coming in contact with any object, would explode; the intention being to destroy the British shipping at Philadelphia. The vessels that very day had been placed in dock for the winter, and thus escaped injury. Some of the kegs exploding near the city gave the alarm, whereupon the British opened fire upon every floating thing seen on the river for the rest of the day. This firing, J - caned the "Battle of the Kegs," furnished Francis Hopkinson a. subject for a facetious poem of 22 stanzas. Forty-five states of this country have established minimum age laws lor workers.
