Firemen Are Instructed

In Use of New Pamper; Machine Is In Service

Edward Jacobs, representative of the fire engine manufacturing concern from which Richmond purchased the new pumper, has just finished giving the firemen of No. 2 hose house instruction in the interior workings of the machine. All the men who work with the pumper are now thoroughly familiar with its operation, and capable of making routine repairs, according to Chief Miller. Commendation of the work done by

Successor to Miss Pound At Hospital Not Chosen Xo steps have been taken as yet to fill the vacancy created by the resignation of Clara Pound as superintendent of Reid Memorial hospital, it was learned Tuesday. Miss Pound resigned

some time ago to accept a similar position in the hospital at Lafayette. She will leave the hospital here on Sept. 1, after completing nearly seven years of service. The resignation came as a surprise to the staff, it was said. The

occur again.

Motorists should not wait for a signal from the officer before making a right hand turn, according to him. Many motorists do not go on around the corner when the sign is swung their way. Instead, they wait for a special sign from the traffic officer. There is no need to do this, he an

HAIL PENSIONS NOT INVOLVED IN SENIORITY

Forfeiture of accumulated pension privileges is not involved in the loss

of seniority by returning men of tne Pennsylvania railroad, says a statement by the company Tuesda. On the Pennsylvania railroad, seniority rights and pension privileges are entirely separate and distinct. "Pensions," says the statement, "are based upon the total years of service, regardless whether they are continuous or not. Under the Pennsylvania railroad's plan, every employe, regardless of grade cr rank, must retire et the age of 70 years. If incapacitated he may retire at 65 or over, if he has been in the service 30 years. He receives as a pension one per cent of his averaee monthly earnings during

his last 10 years of work, mulitplied by the total number of years of service. He may enter or leave the service once or half a dozen times during his career, and the method of computing the pension will be the same in any case. The company pays the pension and bears the cost of operating the pension department."

VARDAMAN CENTER OF

MISSISSIPPI PRIMARY fBy Associated T'ress) JACKSON, Miss., April 15 Mississippi Democrats went to the pol!s today to choose a nominee for the seat in the United States senate occupied

for the last 12 years by John Sharp Williams and select their candidates in six of the eight congressional districts. One supreme justice, six chancellories and six circuit judges also were to be nominated. Nomination is equivalent to election.

Chief interest centered in the three

cornered senatorial fight in which former Senator James K. Vardaman, former representative, Hubert Stephens of New Albany and Miss Belle Kear
