PLAN TO LINK UPPER AND LOWER MICHIGAN PENINSULAS BY BRIDGE

(By Associated Press DETROIT, Ang. 2. The upper and lower .Michigan peninsulas will be linked by a bridge for railroad and vehicular traffic if a ilan set afoot by the Michigan Pikes association is materialiied. The plan for a bridge, that has been discussed vaguely in the past, hat taken definite form following the recent tour of the Pikes association .membership , into northern Michigan. In an address at Marquette, W. S. Gilbreath of Detroit, president of the association, declared present ferry service across the Straits of Mackinac was inadequate to meet the growing ; tourist and commercial traffic between the two peninsulas. Unless a bridge is built, Mr. Gilbreath said, the

state should purchase, and operate

the jerry ..service, bringing about its

; expansion 7t;onceV" "At, present the

, ferry service" is jprivately owned-

?, Horatio S. Earle, widely known for

his work Injbehalf of good roads, declared bridging of the straits would

be no greater feat than was the build Ing of Henry M. Flagler's famous rail

road bridge over the sea to Key West. He said a straits bridge would do for Michigan what the Flagler improvements had done for Florida. " Seven thousand automobiles crossed the strait3 aboard ferry boats last year, against 200 annually a few years ago. ' ,
