SEA GOD IS RULER AMONG FUIS WHO ' , OFFER SACRIFICES From the New, York Times Among the Fijis in former times the favorite deity of the boatmen and fishermen, and cne greatly feared by them, was the shark god. His name 'was. Dakuwaqa (pronounced Dakawonga). This deity was greatly feared and it was believed by all seafarers that to adventure his domain without making sacrifice was extremely foolhardy and ia defiance of faith. His favorite sacrifice to the Fijian god was a drink of yanggona root the kava of the Fijians. Native mythology is naturally full of tales relating to the ferocity of Dakuwaqa, who i3 usually described, not in the form of a shark as might be supposed, but rather in. the shape of a huge Jew fish or Angel fish. This, of course, is quite ordinary as a matter of legend, but Capt David Robbie, the j mayor or Leruka, the second city of y Fiji, and a man of strictest integrity, reports the following incident: "We left Levuka in the cutter Annie on a fine afternoon in December, 1909, and anchored at Makogai until midnight Setting sail at 7 a. m., we left the island of Namena to the eastward about,, six miles distant I was on the starboard quarter. The cutter would be making two or three knots. ' Seized the Vessel "Suddenly I heard a great swish in the sea astern. On looking around there was a great., long, spiky fin and the great square head of Dakuwaqa close to the vessel, and the great wide mouth was plainly to be seen as the fish turned over, as I first thought, to swallow the cutter. I left the tiller without delay and called out to the passenger who was below to come up, but our strange visitor was in good humor, dived clear under the bottom, back downward, and clasped the vessel for three or four minutes, the head being three or four feet ahead and In line with the keel, the tail flat and broad like a whale's. "The fins clasped the sides of the cutter within a few inches of the rail. Both fins were handled by most of the crew. After a short pell under the bottom Dakuwaqa appeared again on our starboard quarter, coming clear of the vessel, belly up. During "his stay under the water a sick Fijian of Wainuna was invoking the fish to be good and not hurt us, and promised him a good root of Fiji yanggona as soon as he returned to shore. Kept Their Promise "After some time Dakuwaqa reeled slightly to the right raising his left eye out of the water, had a good, steady stare at his friends, settled down again, and very slowly turned to stern. We could see his bulk for fully a quarter of an hour after his goodby. The Fijians kept their promise, and a fine, large root of kava was dropped overboard on our return to the spot where Dakuwaqa was supposed to be lurking, waiting to receive his gift "The cutter is thirty-two feet on the keel. Dakuwaqa would be about forty feet long." Is it not easy to believe that the old Fijian god occasionally still haunts the mysterious shores of that fabled archipelago? AUTHORS ARE URGED TO DROP "SEX STUFF" From the Manitoba Free Press If our novelists want to be really diverting, and keep our minds from dwelling on "the undertaker's little black bag," they will have to come on out. from their psychiatric wards, divorce courts and madhouses and pay some attention to the health and cleanness still to be found in the world; they will have to say a few words about the bloom of the flower and forget about the canker worm of "sex" that has so spellbound them. Lots of lovers go to the dogs we all know that; and lots of wives get sick of their beautiful husbands after three months of marriage that'3 true, too; but here and there a faithful pair may still be found another John and Lorna, another Rosalind and Orlando true lovers in that rapture and fervor of love that keeps the whole world young. This is the love whose chronicle diverts humanity from the black door at the end of the journey; but as for this "sex" stuff that tries to pass for love in these days, its diversions are of such a melancholy sort that presently people will be saying, "Give me death; give me anything you like; but for pity's sake don't sicken me with 'sex. These lecherous ladies, hectic flappers, and all this tribe of both sexes with collapsible morals take them away, far, far away; sterilize them, wash them, put them to sleep for several hundred years, bury them, drown them, lose them, but let me forget about them; because the fresh wind still blows on the heath; there is still health and sweetness in the -world, and we prefer the scent of flowers to the mephitic exhalations of a. sewer. .' "If you cannot dear author, write of love, then buy a .spade and do a little digging; raise a cabbage or a turnip an innocent cabbage, a moral turnip. Ah, what a blessed relief that would ;be! There, Indeed, would be some eenuine 'diversion!'"
