Sprague, for a removal of official obstructions to the program for helping wounded and shell-shocked veterans, will get hearty support", says the Chicago Tripune. "The treatment given disabled fighting men has improved greatly since the incoming of the present administration, but that is as it should.be. Doubtless the Wilson administration's efforts were well intended, but they lacked imagination and determination to take no chances, while time has shown the policies followed were very ill-advised. The farming out plan did not work as. expected, and men were scattered so that control over conditions was lost in many

cases, and neglect was inevitable. Thanks to the efforts of the Legion, corrections have been made but the program for a thorough reform has not made proper progress. "What the Legion demands, and the public supports 'the demands, is that every man who paid the heavy penalty of physical or mental disablement, partial or complete, shall be given the very highest order of care. This is not merely a technical question. It is also a question of a cost and a bandage. It is a question of thoughtful and kindly and scientific care. It is not a question of the body. It is a -question of the mind, and every disabled man should be made to feel that his care and restoration are the earnest" purpose of a government which is determined to leave nothing undone for his welfare. "There is only one question of economy in thi3 situation, and that is the saving of our obligation, the highest obligation of the government and the nation. Concentration under the best conditions is demanded by the Legion, and

no delay should be tolerated in making whatever!

provisions are necessary. No chances should bej

taken as to fully adequate hospitalization and the establishment of a system of care meeting every, physical, mental, and moral need of the disabled veteran. '

TODAY'S TALK By George Matthew Adams, Author of "You Can," "Take It," "Up" KNOW YOURSELF BETTER One of the reasons why we so often misjudge and misunderstand others is that we know so little about ourselves. Happiness, contentment, smoothness of human contact is, after all, but the fulfilling of the most golden of all rules the golden rule. If you study yourself in such a way that you bring out all the finest abilities and elements that lie within you, then, you multiply your bests and bring about a larger self that in turn also multiplies in the lives of others. The reason why Aristotle was a greater and more useful philosopher than Plato was because he came closer to human action than Plato. . Plato wanted to remodel life without taking into consideration the deep and evident facts of life, whereas Aristotle wanted to start right off learning more about life before he sought to make it over. The better we know ourselves the better are we prepared to understand others, and to help them. Before we criticize others, why not ask ourselves what our position would be under the same circumstances and environment? As soon as we are able to establish some definite relation to life as a whole, then are we ready to take up its many problems and offer aid in their solution. There are few of us indeed who do not feel the necessity of daily even hourly self-examination, self-study, and self-questioning. And yet it is by this method alone that we grow in self-control and selfmastery ready to help another up. Know yourself better. It is a good sign as we grow older that we grow in silence of speech saying less and think more. And if, as we burst our self-shell, we are able to catch the clearer atmosphere of all humanity, then have we entered into the possible heritage of all. But it all starts by knowing your own self better!

No. 235 Adding Four With Nine Place twelve pennies or checkers in a square as Illustrated so that they count four along each side. The problem is to rearrange the counters so that they count five on each side, a feat which can apparently be accomplished otily by the addition or four more counters. The trick is done thus : Remove four of the counters and arrange the remaining nine so they count three on a elde. Then, on each corner counter p'ace ODe of the four extra counters. That is if checkers are used, make kings ot the corner ones. The square will now count five on each side, as required. Copyright. IStt. Xy Public Ledger Company

AH!, WHERE?

. Ah where is the author of ten years

since, whose works we hailed with a loud hurroo? Reviewers said, "Now another prince of dazzling genius comes into view." For a little while, in its gaudy tints, his halo rattled us humble dubs; we saw his name in the public prints, and he was strong at the Woman's clubs. "He talked of art as his fame arose, and looked like Booth on a one-night stand, was photograph

ed in a queenly pose, his chin at

rest on a lily hand. Ah, where, oh where is that author now, and where the books that he deigned to write? And where is the wreath on the bulging brow, and the Hall Caine .beard

and the ringlets bright? I've sprung

this query on every chump, and harsh

and changeless the answer rings: "Go

ask the keeper who guards the dump, the seneschal of forgotten things."

Pile Suff

Can You Answer These Questions?

Do you know why ointments do not give you quick and lasting relief? Why cutting and operations fail? Do you know the cause of piles is internal? That there 43 a stagnation of blood in the lower bowel? Do you know that there is a harmless internal tablet remedy discovered by Dr. Leonhardt and known as HEMROID, now sold by A. G. Luken Drug Co. and druggists generally, this is guaranteed? HEM-ROID banishes piles by removing the internal cause, by freeing blood circulation in the lower bowel. This simple home treatment has an almost unbelievable record .for sure, safe and lasting relief to thousands of pile sick sufferers, and saves the needless pain and expense of an operation. There is no reason why it should not do the some for you. Advertisement.

After Dinner Stories That even a public survey may possess a humorous aspect is evidenced by a story told by a westerner. It appears that the boundary line between portions of Illinois and Indiana was long in dispute and that at length the government authorized a resurvey, which was duly executed. The old homestead of Granny Garver, one of the early settlers, was found to lie in Illinois, about eleven feet from

the Indiana side. Granny expressed herself as much pleased, remarking that she had "heard tell Injianny was a powerful unhealthy state."

SARATOGA YOUTH USES SHOTGUN TO END LIFE (Special to The Palladium) WINCHESTER, Ind., July 2S. Herman Harmon, 19 years old, committed suicide in his home at Saratoga, seven mile3 northeast of here, Thursday afternoon. Harmon deliberately prepared to take his life by placing the muzzle of a single-barrel shotgun, loaded with bird shot, over his heart

and pulled the trigger with his foot. Nearby residents, hearing the discharge of the gun, rushed to the house and found Harmon lying on the floor in a dying condition. Medical aid was summoned, but he was dead before the physician arrived. It is rumored that the young man was worried about some thieving that had been going on in the village and feared a visit from the sheriff. No warrant for his or any one's ar

rest in or around Saratoga i3 on record at the sheriff's office. Harmon was the adopted son of Willard C. Harmon, a retired farmer. His foster mother is dead. Harmon was alone in the house when the deed was committed.
