THE RICHMOND PALLADIUM AND SUN-TELEGRAM, RICHMOND, IND., FRIDAY, JULY-21, 1922.
THE RICHMOND PALLADIUM AND SUN-TELEGRAM -1 - - - j Published Every Evening Except Sunday by Palladium Printing Co. Palladium Building. North Ninth and Sailor Streets. Entered at the Post Office at Richmond. Indiana, a3 Second-Class Mail Matter. MEMBER OP THE ASSOCIATED PRESS The Associated Prss is exclusively entitled to the use for republication of all news dispatches credited to it or not otherwise credited In this paper, and also the local news published herein. All rights of republication of spe- . clal dispatches herein are also reserved. Good Roads forisolated Communities Indiana has an enviable reputation in all parts of the country for its good roads. Interview any tourist who parks at Glen Miller park
and you will find that his praise of our road system is unstinted. His compliments cover not only our main highways, but many of our side roads. What this means to the state in the form of advertisement and the creation of good will cannot be estimated in dollars and cents. Genuine praise of this sort brings its revenue to Indiana in many ways, and 'all of us share in it directly and indirectly. Motorists of our own community who have .? tried some of thefbad roads of other states do not i hesitate to" tell their friends about their experiences, with the suggestion that these states be avoided if possible on long tours. I There is, however, one phase of our road sysi tem that should receive attention at the earliest
moment. While our main arteries of travel, which are the ones tourists usually use, are rapidly being put into excellent condition, a large number of the side roads are in poor condition. The? main roads out of Richmond in many directions are good. But the roads that go into the isolated portions of this county and of others are still far from being in an ideal condition. During the summer months no one can complain, sut during the rest of the year they are almost impassable. This condition concerns not only the persons who live along these roads, but also the city dwellers. If a farmer finds the road leading from his house to a main highway in bad condition, he is forced to stay at home until the road permits of travel. This keeps him from delivering his produce to the market, from making purchases, from enjoying the forms of relaxation and amusement, which combined make for his happiness and prosperity. The improvement f these roads should be undertaken as soon as the political units are able to pay for the change. If a poor road keeps a farmer from going to market, it does not justify its existence. A highway that .is im
passable for weeks at a time handicaps every) person who lives along it. Public policy suggests j
its improvement at an early date. These improvementscannot be made in a few months, but the betterment of these lateral roads must not be lost sight of in the urge for other i changes that are intended to help the community.

TODAY'S TALK By George Matthew Adams, Author of "You Can," "Take It," "Up" ACCEPTABILITY A graceful loser is an Inspiring person, but I rather admire most the graceful accepter he who is not quite certain what he Is accepting, though certain that he is unafraid. When Franklin Lane, one of the members of President Wilson's cabinet, was told that he had but a few hours to live, he made no complaint, merely answering: "I accept!" And in that statement was crystalized all the heroism of his useful and splendid career. To walk face forward ready to meet fortune or misfortune with the SAME smile well, that is acceptability of the right sort. No one understands" this better than does a mother. How often one hears of that famous picture that was exhibited in Chicago at the World's Fair in 1892 "Breaking Home Ties." The boy is at the door with his rude bundle, about to leave. The mother is looking bravely into his eyes and praying a century of prayers into one short one. The father is silent, as are also the other members of the family. Even the dog who sits at the feet of the boy seems to understand this great business of going out into the world alone. But the mother, the father, the sisters, and even the dog, accept no one flinches. Soon the door will be closed and the boy will be out to test his metal unaided. There is nothing that is able to warm the soul to white heat quite so quickly as this acceptability. We need it in the morning when the day is at bud. We need it when under stress, and when alone, bound by a conflict of desires and decisions. The most difficult task when any question comes up is the decision regarding it, one way or the other. Once you decide, you have a road and can go ahead. But don't TRY too hard to accept just accept!

Must the president of the United States take the oath of office in Washington? X. R. A. Customarily the president takes the oath of office in Washington, but there is no provision of law to that effect For instance, when Roosevelt as vice-president succeeded McKinley as president the oath of office was administered to him at the home of Ansley Wilcox, a Buffalo attorney, on September 14, 1901.

A New York doctor, with quite a nifty practice, had just bought a new car, had been studying its parts and was all smoked up over it. A patient limped into the private office and seemed all tuckered out. The mind of the doctor was full of automobile instructions and he could think of nothing else. "I'm all in," said the patient. "You sotta fix me up somehow."
"What seems to be the trouble?"

No. 233 The Balanced Egg An ordinary egg is placed on end on the tablecloth by the performer, who thus emulates the famous feat of Columbus. The egg may be thoroughly examined, and the end shown to be unbroken. The spectators will find themselves unable to duplicate the trick. All that is necessary is a tiny pile of salt, which the performer previously placed on the table. The egg is pushed down on to the salt, which furnishes enough resistance to make the egg stand on end. When the egg is picked up the salt is whisked away by the hand.
