Chips and Slips TED BLANKENSHIP IS THE latest rookie pitcher to flash across the baseball horizon. The young Texas stripling has given Kid Gleason more cause for joy in looking over his White Sox pitching department. Gleason glommed onto Blankenship late last season after the righthander had pitched brilliant ball for Bonham, his home town team In the Texas-Oklahoma League. One of Blankenship's feats last year, his first in professional baseball, according to the dope at hand, was the winning of a doubleheader to celebrate Independence Day. Hurling against Shermon he won the first 11 to 5 and the second 3 to 1. He found time while hurling the double bill to col lect 10 base-hits. When you consider Gleason now has this youngster, Charlie Robertson, Shovel Hodge and Leverette showing such wonderful promise it's hard to see how the Sox can be halted along about next season. A young woman writer of some reputation not long ago asked a wellknown editor to give his opinion on a book she intended to publish. "If," said she, "the work is not up to the mark, I beg you to tell me frankly,, as I have other irons in tho fire, and, should you think that this is not likely to succeed, I can bring out some-thing else." After reading several minutes the editor returned the manuscipt with this sententious observation: "Madam, I would advise you to put this where your irons are." The curves and speed of Lon Goldsberry, Rose City hurler, were too much for the Eagle batsmen. His delivery was varied at all times and he had the number of the locals. Somebody wished that Goldsberry would shorten his name, if he is to be so prominent in a ball game as he w,as in Sunday's tilt. They hit for the CIRCUIT Sunday: Hill, Indianapolis; Mayer and Wade, Minneapolis; Hill and Black, Toledo; Konetchy, Toledo; Good, Kansas City; Griffin, Milwaukee; Walker, Phillies; Miller, Chicago Cubs; Yaryan and Hooper, Chicago White Sox; Daubert, Cincinnati. It won't be long now before St. Louis teams will be leading in each the American and National leagues. The costly New York teams have been dropping fast and the deserving Western teams are going to show them a big fight for the premier honors of the National pastime. Miss Hilda James, British swimming star and the champion of Europe was to sail July 15 from her home in Liverpool for America, where she will represent England in the first int?r-
