BY JUNE ROBINSON VENICE, Italy, June 30. (By Mail to The Palladium). Built upon 17 islands and joined by ribbon-like canals, Venice is one of the most popular places in Italy for tourists to visit since it. is so unique. Then, too, it ha3 Saint Mark's cathedral and many other beautiful buildings. Everything is ricturesque in Venice the gilding black gondolas, the gracefully arching stone bridges, the quaint stone houses with the water of the canal lapping rft up over the doorstone. What streets exist in Venice are
used only for walking and are very narrow, as space is precious. A wide promenade along the waterfront and the great square before Saint Mark's a t liiti. i-uuru jiijwciuo ..hac elitterlne witn leweis, oeaas, run ot laces, leather goods, gowns, hooks and queer articles from every place in the world. Venice, being a meeting place between the east and west, contains the most varied assortment of merchandise in Italy. Swish of Gondolas Never is there the sound of wheels, autos or cars only the swish, swish of gondolas being sculled by or the gibber of the gondoliers. . While there seems to be great poverty every place in Italy, every one seems to be sublimely, ecstatically happy. All day singing can be heard. Gondoliers plying up and down the canals all the day sing gaily, while others strum on instruments. In the evening there is music everywhere. And mosquitoes! If mosquitoes ever are discovered to have a commercial value, Venice surely will lead the world in breeding them, as she has the resources and a head start. Venice also is "pigeon heaven," as no one can kill them here and they are fed on Saint Mark's square daily by the hundreds. Here, as in all Italy, prices on things are very low, due to the low rate Italy has on exchange. Ameri- ! cans now can get 20 lires for their dollar where before the war they received only five. The lire, in other words, has depreciated from 20 cents to five cents in American money.

The owned home not only protects your family, but it can actually be made to aid in its support as well. In addition to the direct saving in rent and other living costs, there are many small enterprises for adding to the income that are open to those who have their own home and garden plot. Many a thrifty family has been kept together and supported itself entirely by congenial work right in the home, with its garden, Its poultry or rabbit yard, and often a boarder or two or a rented room. Many another family has easily weathered hard, moneyless days and weeks, by the aid of that same garden and poultry yard, that would under other conditions have meant disaster and misery untold. Taxes there are, yes, and other expenses, too. Eut they are not equal to rent, and even if one is a little behind It does not mean the fear of ejectment and a shelterless brood.
