Riegle 30 LOOK FOR CONFABS TO REGULATE GOLF AND TENNIS RULES nr FRANK G. MKXKB America wants a standardization of golf and Europe wants one concerning tennis. All of which probably will result in important international confabs this winter and the adoption of new rules and regulations with reference to both sports. M. R. Galley, secretary of the International Lawn Tennis association, already has chased along from Paris an invitation for American . representation at a big tennis pow-wow there next winter. It is the hope of the federation that such a meeting can standardize the manufacture of tennis balls and also bring about a conformity of certain rules which now conflict. Meanwhile American golf executors are making plans for an intern? tional meeting where, it is expected, existing clashes in some of American and European regulations will be eliminated. The fact that sportsmen on both sides of the Atlantic feel it is vitally necessary to standardize the rules, reawakens the sportive public to the growth of international rivalry in golf and tennis. ) Visiting Was Unusual A dozen years ago it was a novelty to see a European playing on American courts or on American links and vice versa. But now it is radically different. Each year hundreds of Americans journey across the Atlantic to enter into competition there and Europe returns the compliment by sending across some of its greatest e-nlfors and tennis players. Realizing that the friendly athletic rivalry is certain to increase by leaps and bounds through the coming year3, and fully cognizant that American and European rules differ in some fairly vital respects, the law makers want to make all things uniform without further delay. At present there is a variation in the size of tennis balls used in the United States and Europe. The American ball is 2 9-16 inches in diameter, whereas the English ball is 2 .Inches a trifle smaller. And the American ball ranges from 2 ounces to 2 l-i6 ounce3 in weight, whereas the minimum for the European ball is 1 15-lft - and the maximum 2 1-15 ounces. Iron Out Differences In 1920, when America revised ita rules and Europe did the same thing, most of the big differences In the game were abolished. But there still is conflict, in a slight way at least, as regards service. . In Europe it is ruled that the server shall not run, walk, hop or jump before service has been deliv ered. America ruies uai must take a position with both feet back of the-base-lines and keep one on the ground until the racquet strikes the ball. Great Britoin bars the use of spikes; America permits spikes up to V4 inch In length. The main efforts of the tennis conference, therefore, will be devoted to standardization of size and weight of ball, uniformity of service rules, and the future fate of the spikes. Until a very few years ago the Royal and Ancient Golf club of St. Andrews, Scotland, practically dic-

America adopted them in entirety at first, but as the game increased in the United States, the ruling powers here made some Americanized amendments. All of this was resented boldly by St. Andrews at first, but when St. Andrews came to realize that America now houses more golfers than Great Britain, it treated the American rules with a sort of silent contempt. Lately, however, St. Andrews has shown a disposition to concedes that some of the American rules are not altogether bad. "When sounded out recently on the matter of a parley with Americans for the purpose of standardizing the game, St. Andrews seemed to be in a fairly receptive mood, and so the meeting undoubtedly will be put on this winter. There is at present a wide difference of official opinion in America and England on the subject of lost balls and out of bounds. Also the balls used in the two countries are not the eame. A few other differences exist. Those are adjustments which the conference of the ensuing winter may bring abouL (Copyright J 021 By Kln Feature. Syndicate, Inc.)
