GO-OPERATIVE MINING LARGELY RESPONSIBLE FOR BIG GOAL YIELD fPv Associated Press) PITTSBURG. Kans.. July 12. Cooperative coal mining In the Kansas coal field i3 responsible for a large part of the more than 6,000 tons daily being produced in the field. In spite of the strike, the Kansas field has been nrodncinE' coal in con siderable Quantities from the first. Most of it has been shipped on rai!-j roads. Some of it has been trucked; out to Joplin and other points where! there has been a market forvfuel. There are two classes of cooperative miners. The first comprises men who operate small or "dinky" minej ana are in lact me real operators 01 the mines. The second comprises the men who are working at large mines under company supervision. The first class is not new in the Kansas field. The plan is simple. A small group of miners sometimes half a dozen and sometimes fifteen or twenty organizes and leases a small mine. The owner of the property is to receive a royalty of 25 to 50 cents a ton for the coal. The men operate the mine themselves and divide the profits. Larger Scale Used Tn the other class of cooperative rinir"' thp nnprntlnns arc on a lareor scale. Officials of the miners" union I .assert the plan is simply a ruse to. permit miners to work and stil not break with the union. "Soviet" is the term appfled by one of the district officials. Under this plan of cooperation, the men orgpwize to work a mine. Thv work is to be done under the supervision of a company foreman. Thoi men are paid so much a ton for tho coal they dig, loaded on the cars. Atj the Sheridan mines, it is said, the J men receive $2.50 a ton. The men ; pay half of the salary of the foreman , rnd the company pays the othr half. The company pays the men for the cnnl that is loadrd and the men di-j vide the proceeds. ' Tuis plan is in use at Sheridan; mines Nos. 14, 12, 18 and 10, all largo shafts. The agreement bet ween the j cn.-r.pany and the men is Faid to bej rather loose, permitting discontinuance on short notice. I Oreanizers for the union say that! p'l the men who are working at the Sheridan mines have become operators and thereby have put themselves cut of the union.
