Restriction of Immigration That the United States never will return to the wide open door immigration policy is the belief of Representative Johnson, chairman of the house committee on immigration and father of the present restriction law. Passage of a permanent restriction measure at next winter's session is prophesied by. Johnson. The bill he expects to see passed gives all countries a base quota of 600 plus two per cent of .the aliens from . that country in the Unittr States. As the situationinow stands the present three per cent restrictive a&t has been extended for a two-year period from July 1. Johnson favors the enactment of permanent legislation which will become effective before the expiration of the two-year period. "Many persons wonder why the percentage
law has not been tightened up and made more binding?' says Johnson in discussing the situation. "Some 'ask why congress has not enacted a law completely suspending immigration for a period of years. Let me remind all of these questioners that it took more than 25 years of continuous effort to get a law even as restrictive as the three per cent act. "Each and every bill designed really to restrict immigration passed by the senate and house from the first days of the administration
of Grover Cleveland to the last days of -the administration of Woodrow Wilson was vetoed for some reason or other, usually because the pro
posed law interfered with that nonsensical notion that the United States was always to be the asylum for the oppressed of the world. "In my opinion, the act limiting immigration to 355,000 for the fiscal year ending June 30 came in the nick of time. It has saved the United States in that year from an influx of fully 1,500,000 immigrants at a time when we could neither assimilate nor employ them. "When -the year is , up we will find that 250,000 immigrants have been admitted, including 2,800 or 2,900 who have been admitted temporarily for reasons of humanity and because of difficulties in getting the new law into operation."

Three doses of the vaccine are injected under the skin at intervals of aborit one week. After each dose there may be slight swelling and tenderness. Sometimes there is fever and headache for a short time. This vaccination affords protection against typhoid fever which lasts from one to four years. Q. How many different articles are handled by druggists? G. E. C. A. There are now more than 5,700 articles in the department of drugs, chemicals, oils, etc., and about 8.000 in the department of proprietary or patent medicines,, while various sundries bring up the total number of articles handled by the drug trade of today to approximately 25,000. Q. From what musical instrument was the piano developed? J. W. A. Primitive man discovered that the string on a hunter's bow emitted a tone when plucked. After a time the harp was evolved. The cithara was a development of the harp. Then came the dulcimer, the clavicord, harpsicord and pianoforte. Q. What can be used to give mirrors and windows a polished look? F. C. S. A. Apply calcined magnesia moistened with benzine. Q. Can a man be held to a contract he made while he was intoxicated? E. B. B. A. The general rule is that contracts made by a person under the influence of liquor are voidable but not void, so that if some innocent third person for value acquires rights the contract is binding upon the person making it. If a person makes a .tontract when he is so far under the influence of liquor as to be deprived of his senses, and the contract is so onesided as to be unreasonable, the question of fraud may enter into the transaction.
TODAY'S TALK By George Matthew Adams, Author of "You Can," "Take It' "Up" CONCENTRATION I am reminded time and time again that concentration is, in my humble judgment, one of the major virtues. Take the average human worker today, give him a task and then leave him and ycu are almost sure to see a picture of wobbling and star-gazing. I have in mind a poor immigrant boy whose father and mother could neither read nor write, but whose desire to see their small boy do the things that they had missed, was so strong that the' mother said she would rather starve than not see him get an education. It has been my pleasure to see that boy rise year by year in usefulness and power. I have watched him work. He concentrates. He gets things done. Then he goes to other things and gets them done. What a debt the world -owes to Marconi, the great inventor of the wireless telephone! It was only a little while ago that his announcements were received with doubt and skepticism. Now the entire world listens when he has an announcement, for they have seen the practical demonstration of his years and years of concentration. Recently this wizard man stated that he wanted the pleasure of sending a word around the world in just a few minutes. I am one who expects to see him accomplish this ambition. You with the ability to concentrate and the inclination to plan ahead the world wants you! Concentration gets things started, puts them through to a finish and then opens up new and more important things to do. i And concentration arouses interest, which is one of the greatest factors in any success. I can imagine Columbus going to bed at night and waking up in the morning with but one single thought in his mind new land, an undiscovered world! For, after one of the most daring attempts in the history of the world at that time, he won his goal because when everything and all on board seemed lost forever, this Columbus could give but one command: "Sail on and on and on!" I'll change that command just a little and make it into 'a motto for you who read this brief Talk: Keep on and on and on.

After Dinner Stories Six-year-old Dora returned unusually early from school the other day. She rang the, door bell. There was no answer. She rang again, a little longer. Still there was no response. A third time she pressed the button, long and hard. Nobody came to the door, and she pressed her nose against the window pane and in a shrill voice, which caught the ears of every neighbor, called: "It's all right, mamma, I'm not the installment man." No. 225 The Magnetized Walnut An English walnut is held between the tips of the thumb and forefinger. After having been rubbed on the coat to generate "magnetism" the thumb is removed and the nut adheres to the tip of the forefinger, as shown in the diagram. In rubbing the walnut secretly spread the shells a trifle at the top. The tip of the finger is pressed into the opening, and when pressure is released the half shells will grip a bit of the flesh of the fingertip. The walnut will then adhere until removed by the other hand. A matchbox can be similarly "magnetized." by pinching the fingertip between the drawer and the cover of th box.
