SUPPOSED SIGNALS FROM MARS FOUND SCHENECTADY WAVE

SCHENECTADY. K Y.. June 29. The mystery of the 150.000 meter wave length, heard by Marconi -while listening for signals from Mara, and thought to be carrying those 6ignal3, was solved Monday -when Senator Marconi, on a visit to the General

Electric plant here, -was informed by

Dr. Irving Langmuir, electrical engineer for the company, that the unusual wave length had been emitted by the Schenectady station.

This is the first time such a wave length has been used, 30,000 meters

having been the extreme wave lengthheretofore. The high wave length was produced experimentally and sent out on the trolly wires between Schenectady and Saratoga, in tests conducted between the two cities. The miles of trolly wire acted as an immense aerial, giving the wave off Into the air. A new and revolutionary Invention, destined to cause the scrapping of hundreds of transmitting stations and millions of dollars worth of old type alternators, also was explained by Dr.

Langmuir. In place of the cumber

some Alexanderson alternator a 50

kilowatt tube has been designed

whichwill develop 12 horsepower. The tube is -used for generating higli

frequency currents, a duty hitherto

performed by the alternator, a very

large and somewhat noisy machine.

THE economical way to stoke your furnace is to keep the fire box full. The economical way to cool your refrigerator is to keep the ice chamber full. You save ice because it melts more slowly; and you preserve your food better, by keeping the temperature down. The ice chamber should never become less than half full for best results. It is very poor economy to take less ice than you really need. You fail to get full benefit from it. Half a day without enough ice may spoil a refrigerator full of food.
