All rights of republication of speclal dispatches herein are also reserved. Old Hard Facts Gaar Williams, a native of this city, in one of his cartoons in the Chicago Tribune, depicts a college graduate standing at the side of a grindstone, with Mr. Hard Facts telling him, "Now all you gotta do is t' hold your nose on that for forty or fifty years." Mr. Williams points out a valuable truth, which some graduates and a large number of others who never saw the inside of a college building ignore, namely that you cannot proceed through life without working hard. The fallacy of "big pay with little work" has

taken possession of many who fondly imagine that the good things in life are to be had for the asking, and that work is a non-essential. No college degree, and no harrangue of a soapbox orator, will be able to relegate work to the rear. Tho necessity of hard work is what Mr. Williams depicts it to be, "Old Hard Facts." The successful men of today were the workers of yesterday. If you do not believe it, interview the manufacturers and business men of

Richmond and other cities. The idler of today is the pauper of tomorrow. And if you don't believe that truth, study the records of the human failures here and elsewhere. The pernicious doctrine of enjoying the fruits

of success without working for them has taken hold of too many of us, retarding progress which we could make, and engendering a dangerous frame of mind. ! Let a man accumulate a competence, and idlers and dreamers, in a jealous mood, envy him his possessions, and assert that they have a right to share it with him, forgetting that while he toiled and saved they loafed and spent. Back of the savings of most men are years of self-denial and frugality. That period was the basic one of their careers. That was when they laid the foundation of their wealth. It is manifestly unfair for an idler and spendthrift to demand a share of the goods which a conservative and economical man saved, and which he

subsequently used to create his ofn financial in

dependence. Back of every envious complaint against the

good fortune of others usually can be found the

sloth and laziness of the person making the as

sertion. He refused or neglected to save in the!

days of opportunity, and so he tries to hide his failure by condemning the men and women who did. But "Old Hard Facts" cannot be ignored or sidestepped. You may fool yourself for the time being, but presently the economic law overwhelms you. The way to acquire money is by saving it.

TODAY'S TALK By George Matthew Adams, Author of "You Can," "Take It," "Up" YOUR HIDDEN FRIENDS . Your greatest possibilities for adde-d happiness in this world lie in your opportunities for new friends Every time you walk down the street In every person you pass are these hidden friend3 present. And you never know at what hour, under what circumstance, some hidden friend may be revealed to you. Much is said about the old friend. But it must be remembered that every old friend was once a very new friend. I like to feel that each one of us is all the time sending out silent messages from these personalities of ours, and that they are finding lodgment in many a 6tray heart, that we may never have communicated wiih before. Walt Whitman in his daily Journal tells of seeing Abraham Lincoln out for his walk in Washington, and of how the president often bowed and smiled to him as he passed. And though no words were spoken. Whitman seemed to catch many a divine message of cheer and inspiration from the fice and eyes of that burdened man. The very person whom you may have sneered at or criticized for some imagined reason as you passed him, may have been nurturing a garden of beauty in his soul for your own great growth if you but knew. We should keep the shades of our hearts well up so that every ray of love and sunshine can creep in, to keep us warm. In this manner may we become the hidden friend for someone else. Could a greater privilege come to you?

VACATIONS

The chleft pleasure of a vacation lies in the anticipation. On March 1 you begin planning your vacation and you enjoy this vacation immensely right up to the time you ftart. But there is no vacation in the world that lives up to its advance notices. When you get to the vacation point you begin comparing it with home, you think of the dear old electric fan, the large, cool movie house, the de lightful ride on the car. If you take your vacation earlv von

are sore all the rest of the summer because you didn't take it later. If you take it late you are sore all summer because it is so slow in coming. When you get back home with 4,000 mosquito bites and an earful of chiggers and sand fleas, the first thing vou do is to go and bury your clothes and then Bii down and figure what

you could have bought in the way of an automobile with the money you rpent at Sleephurst, tho resort where you could do everything but sleep. Vacations are sometimes most enjoyed by the members of the family who stay at home, but to those who go, there Is always, one consalation. There is always something to look

forward to the getting back to the' old apartment with modern conven-l iences. j This is written by a dyspeptic cynic ' who does not get a vacation. The typical clover region of the; United States occupies the northeast-, era part,, extending west into Minne-i

sota and south approximately to the Ohio river and the Mason and Dixon line.
