THE RICHMOND PALLADIUM AND SUN-TELEGRAM, RICHMOND, IND., THURSDAY, JUNE 22, 1922.

Entered at the Post Office at Richmond, Indiana, as - Second-Class Mail Matter. MEM Ilk K OF THE ASSOCIATED PRESS The Associated Press in xclusivelv entitled to th use for republication of all news dispatches credited to it or not otherwise credited In this paper, and also the local news published herein. The Community Chest The feasibility of raising funds for six Charities in one, rather than by sporadic attempts throughout the year, is to be tried in the Community Chest drive which is to be put on here in a few days. : ' " ' ; ' The plan has many features to recommend its adoption, chief among them being the saving of time and effort in making six separate campaigns for funds, which usually take place. The time and energy consumed in these drives will be concentrated in the one effort. The proposal leaves the donor absolutely free to designate the disposition of his gift. He may single out one charity and give the full amount

for that purpose; or he may select three of the six; or he may let the budget committee divide the gift according to the plan which has been announced for its distribution. The plan is an experiment here.. It has been tried successfully elsewhere, and probably will be found to be an improvement over methods used heretofore in this community. The citizens

will be left to judge about the merits of the proposal. But,this fact cannot be ignored. There is a certain amount of legitimate social relief and uplift work which has to be done in this community. Money is required to finance the agencies which do this work. This money must originate from the public. It can come from no other source. We cannot deny the necessity of providing funds for these purposes. We may not agree with the aims and purposes of all the agencies included in the present drive, but some of them at least must receive our approval and merit our support. The proposed plan gives us an opportunity to help any cause we may select. The citizens have been well informed of the financial needs of the six organizations. They also know what the plan proposes to do. It is

now their duty to show their benevolence by substantial gifts which will assure these agencies enough money to operate for a year without making further appeals. If the present idea receives warm support, indiscriminate asking of funds for the six organizations will cease for twelve months. They will have the funds to perform their work, and the citizens need not worry about their needs. The success of the campaign will depend pri

marily upon the benevolence of a public which wants its charitable and social betterment enterprises administered in a highly efficient manner. It is a call to duty wThich the citizens cannot afford to ignore or sidestep.

TODAY'S TALK By George Matthew Adams, Author of "You Can," "Take IV "Up" YOUR LITTLE DEVILS - Your real enemies are your little Devils those silent, unseen little fellows in the garb of gloomy and sulky moods, fear, gossip, lying, mistrust, discouragement, cynicism, that hang to your heels and follow you, irritate you, madden you. It is they who block your success, when you allow them to stay with you. Your first and biggest task each day la to start of! right by ridding yourself of your little Devils. For otherwise, if you give them an inch they will seek to take f miles and all your smiles! The little Bad Mood Devil that takes you Into your day with a grouch over some trivial thing the Shrug-shoulder Devil that seeks to past a slur upon a character the little Mistrust Devil that sits impudently at conference when your judgment and courage should be alone away with them all! Their increasing poweTS that grow from day to day so long as you let them hang around, sap and suck at your very lifeblood, your independence, your happiness. Your biggest task each day is to start off right by ridding yourself early of your little Devils. Don't allow them to deceive you. They wear false faces! They smile smoothly. Also, they speak softly sometimes. But be on guard. They will follow you from place to place, but if you are brave and calm enough, ever self-controlled, your little Devils might as well not exist you won't need to fear them, because they won't be" able to see you.
