are too prejudiced to appreciate the meaning of the order, but, on the other hand, it will be warmly welcomed by the fathers and mothers who believe in the protection of their children. One of the condemned schools is in Wayne county, but the county superintendent says that the order fellows arrangements which had been made to erect a new building and is not a reflection on the patrons of that district. Wayne county is one of the most progressive political units of the state, which always has kept a watchful eye on the school system. Few parents will be found here who will op , pose the condemnation of an old school house because it is insanitary. Enlightened fathers and mothers learned long ago that the building ' in which the children spend from six to eight hours a day must be sanitary and well equipped if the boys and girls are to remain healthy, and for that reason they do not find fault with tha school authorities wrhen they recommend new structures. The state board of health is performing a more valuable service in the condemnation of wornout school houses than most of us imagine

Hundreds of speakers delivered addresses before grade, high school and college classes during the commencement weeks which have just closed. The predominate note in most of the speeches was the idea of service, the thought that the young men and women should enter the world feeling that'"they owe a duty to themselves and also to the community. They must not proceed entirely on the theory that they are isolated units of society, but rather consider themselves duty bound to help and assist others. The operations of the Golden Rule are beginning to be understood better every day in all walks of life. The selfish individual who doesn't want to give-of his time and money to the promotion of the general welfare is beginning to learn that he has not been in touch with modern views. . If the thousands of young men and women who quit the schools this month begin their work
in this life imbued with the idea of performing service, the coming generation will be quite dif
ferent from the present one, and mankind will bless them and their work.
TODAY'S TALK Ey George Matthew Adams, Author of "You Can," "Take It," "Up" THE VIOLET YIELDS TO THE ROSE Each season of the year calls for its favorite admirers. Spring's unfolding and building its crocuses, its buttercups. Its violets. Summer'3 maturity, Autumn's golds and browns, and Winter's silvered snows. But as Spring yields Its violets to the roses of June, it does seem a3 though Heaven had dropped a few of its choicest odors to make this month, as Lowell has written, the choicest of them all 'For what is so rare as a day in June?" June the month, of brides and beauty! But it's the blending of the two months, so unconscious, that makes each bo rich in beauty the tiny, delicate violets, graceful, proud and full of fine family history, bowing as they wither to the royal velvet of the rose. Lift is a cycle of yielding youth to manhood and manhood to old age, the day to the night, the shower to the drawing rays of tho Bun. All of which suggests to our immortal souls, acceptance and resignation. And if we go through this little life with such a spirit, I am sure that the worry lines will be few and the life line long. Nature is so gentle. We would both gain and grow if we only kept closer to hex and consulted her various moods. I shall be sorry to see June go. For to me it Is the pearl of tho months. Oh, to bo In tho -wildest country during the month of June! To tramp and explore and just relax among the flowers and tree3. To brush through tall ferns and hear the crackle of broken sticks and to feel one's feet spring on the cushiony floor of the woods. "God's in His heaven" 6urely when the violet yields to the rose!

be eliminated if they , were torn, Idea of Service Rippling Rhymes By Walt Mason THE WIFE'S HUSBAND Among the toilers in the mart he wrought till he was old; he labored with a broken heart, that he might gain some gold. And gold he w.on, for he was wise in commerce and in trade, but in his darkly brooding eyes no sunshine ever played. He was the husband of his wife, and she, a social queen, pursued a vain and giddy life that called for much long green. She "entertained" three times a week, bridge-whisted once or twice, and her sad husband, worn and meek, went forth to raise the price. She moved in pomp and circumstance, her hats and gowns were fin; and James, with patches on his pants, would in a chophouse dine. He saved a nickel now and then, and placed it in a can; "Some day," he sighed, "when I've a yen, I'll carry out my plan. I'll buy twelve feet of hempen rope, a broadax and a knife, a pint or so of deadly dope and thus escape my wife. I'll pack with bombs my old valise, and Jump Into a pond; for I must have the rest and peace that's billed for the beyond." The foolish woman had no thought of vows her husband swore, until one evening he was brought to her upon a door. And then at last her conscience struck, remorse within her burned; "I might have let him keep a buck," she moaned, "from what he earned." Memories of Old Days In This Paper Ten Yeara -Age Today Considerable trouble was being experienced in securing juries to try cases In the Wayne circuit court. Farmers were in their busy season, and business men were too engulfed by their work to give their time for jury service willingly. Judge Fox declared that it was the duty of every business man, as well as farmer, to serve on a jury when he was called and that he should not make excuses to be released from such duty. Musings fcr the Evening THE CALL OF THE NIGHT When Sol has sought his daily rest, And Luna mounts the eastern sky To be encradled in the west As, later, dawn's first blush draws nigh; When Ursa Major studs the scene With seven gems of purest ray And starlight flashes on the screen To take the place of sleeping day.
