TODAY'S TALK By George Matthew Adams, Author of "You Can," "Take It," "Up" THE COMMON LIFE DIVINE G. K. Chesterton, in his essay on "Savonarola," has this to say: "Savonarola addressed himself to the hardest task of all earthly tasks, that of making men turn back and wonder at the simplicities they had learned to ignore." There are those who find nothing In plenty but the broken and useless husks of hunger. The great masterpieces of Millet were conceived and executed from the common life divine from the daily duties of the toiler. His is the man with a wheelbarrow, the woman with a churn, the worker in the field, or the hard-handed peasant welcoming his child at sundown. It was at splitting rails that Lincoln grew. Thoreau so loved the charm of the woods and pond and open field that he withdrew entirely from town life and lived there, alone. And it was while living this beautiful, free and inspiring life that he wrote his most inspiring essays of simple ways and things. He who through blocd has become a king in name only, must often blush In his heart at the true kingliness of those about him who may be no more, perhaps, than mere servants about his palace. Recent events have proved that even a king needs more than a throne and huge armies to MAKE him a king. Carlyle's idea of a king was the man who could do things. In other words the man who rose with the sun and went about his work with beauty in his heart and determination back of his will to do many useful things. There is nothing with more divinity in it than the common everyday life. God alone marks our lessons when the day is done. And He alone may know whether the poor worker with the pick has not stood highest of all. Greatness is hidden development come from where It may!

Rippling Rhymes By Walt Mason THE DOVE OF PEACE Oh, the dove is shot to pieces, and it wobbles as it flies, with its plumage an m creases and red pepper in its eyes; every day it's sorely jolted, and it looks about half moulted, and the olive branch is bolted, and it sickens and it dies. For the nations lust for slaughter, as they used to Jong ago; ah, poor dove the captains swat her, hoping that the blood will flow; once again the sabre rattles and the hag of warfare tattles tales of sieges and of battles, armies oozing to and fro. The slips are folded, dropped Into a hat, and shaken. The performer Immediately removes the slip with the writer's name. Use a small sheet of tablet paper to make the slips. Fold the sheet into three cross divisions. The spectator is told to write his name on the middle section, and then to tear the slips along the folded lines. The slips are then folded twice across.
